While we were at Minā with ʿUmar, there was a stout woman on a she-donkey, weeping. The people had almost killed her in the crush, saying: "You have committed adultery!" When she reached ʿUmar, he said: "What makes you weep? A woman may at times be forced!" She said: "I was a woman of heavy sleep, and Allah used to provide me with the night prayer. I prayed one night and then slept. By Allah, nothing woke me except a man who had mounted me. I looked at him as he was turning away, and I do not know who he was among Allah's creation!" ʿUmar said: "If I were to kill this woman, I would fear the Fire for the two mountains (of Mecca)!" Then he wrote to the provinces that no one should be put to death for it."
