The Great Expedition of Badr
وَاسْتَفْتَحَ أبو جهل فِي ذَلِكَ الْيَوْمِ، فَقَالَ: اللَّهُمَّ أَقْطَعُنَا لِلرَّحِمِ، وَآتَانَا بِمَا لَا نَعْرِفُهُ فَأَحْنِهِ الْغَدَاةَ، اللَّهُمَّ أَيُّنَا كَانَ أَحَبَّ إِلَيْكَ، وَأَرْضَى عِنْدَكَ، فَانْصُرْهُ الْيَوْمَ، فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ: ( إِنْ تَسْتَفْتِحُوا فَقَدْ جَاءَكُمُ الْفَتْحُ وَإِنْ تَنْتَهُوا فَهُوَ خَيْرٌ لَكُمْ وَإِنْ تَعُودُوا نَعُدْ وَلَنْ تُغْنِيَ عَنْكُمْ فِئَتُكُمْ شَيْئًا وَلَوْ كَثُرَتْ وَأَنَّ اللَّهَ مَعَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ) [ الْأَنْفَالِ: 19 ].
Translation
✧ And Abu Jahl sought a decisive judgment on that day, saying: 'O Allah, whichever of us cut off ties of kinship, and brought us what we do not know, then destroy him this morning. O Allah, whichever of us was more beloved to You and more pleasing in Your sight, then grant him victory today.' So Allah, Mighty and Majestic, sent down: 'If you seek a decisive judgment, then the decisive judgment has come to you. And if you cease, it is better for you. And if you return, We will return, and your forces will never avail you anything, even if they are many. And indeed, Allah is with the believers' [al-Anfal: 19].
