The story of Hud (peace be upon him)

Translation

✧ ʿĀd, and they are the first ʿĀd, were the first to worship idols after the Flood. Their idols were three: Ṣadd, Ṣamūd, and Hirā. It is also said one of them was called Ḍurā, the other Ḍamūr, and the third al-Habā. This is clear in His saying to them: “And remember when He made you successors after the people of Nūḥ and increased you in stature extensively” [al-Aʿrāf: 69], meaning He made them the strongest people of their time in build, might, and seizing. And He said in al-Muʾminūn: “Then We produced after them another generation” [al-Muʾminūn: 31], and they are the people of Hūd according to the correct view. Others claimed that they are Thamūd, because of His saying: “So the blast seized them in truth, and We made them as scum” [al-Muʾminūn: 41]. They said: The people of Ṣāliḥ are those who were destroyed by the blast, whereas ʿĀd were destroyed by a furious roaring wind [al-Ḥāqqah: 6]. What they said does not preclude the combination of the blast and the furious wind upon them, as will come in the story of the people of Madyan, the companions of al-Aykah, for types of punishments came together upon them. Then there is no disagreement that ʿĀd were before Thamūd. The point is that ʿĀd were coarse Arabs, disbelievers, insolent, and rebellious in idol worship.
