The first pledge of al-Aqabah and the beginning of the Ansar's entry into Islam
Translation
✧ [The covenant of the Messenger with those who pledged allegiance at al-ʿAqabah] Ibn Isḥāq said: Yazīd b. Abī Ḥabīb narrated to me, from (Abū) Marthad b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Yazanī, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿUsaylah al-Ṣunābiḥī, from ʿUbādah b. al-Ṣāmit, who said: I was among those who attended the first al-ʿAqabah, and we were twelve men. We pledged allegiance to the Messenger of God ﷺ with the pledge of the women, and that was before war was made obligatory: that we would not associate anything with God, that we would not steal, that we would not commit fornication, that we would not kill our children, that we would not bring a slanderous lie we fabricate between our hands and our feet, and that we would not disobey him in what is right. If you fulfill this, then Paradise is yours. And if you fall into any of that, then your affair is with God, Mighty and Majestic: if He wills, He punishes, and if He wills, He forgives. Ibn Isḥāq said: Ibn Shihāb al-Zuhrī mentioned, from ʿĀʾidh Allāh b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Khawlānī Abū Idrīs, that ʿUbādah b. al-Ṣāmit narrated to him that he said: We pledged allegiance to the Messenger of God ﷺ on the night of the first al-ʿAqabah: that we would not associate anything with God, that we would not steal, that we would not commit fornication, that we would not kill our children, that we would not bring a slanderous lie we fabricate between our hands and our feet, and that we would not disobey him in what is right. If you fulfill this, then Paradise is yours. And if you fall into any of that, and you are punished for it in this world, it is an expiation for it. And if it is concealed from you until the Day of Resurrection, then your affair is with God, Mighty and Majestic: if He wills, He punishes, and if He wills, He forgives.
