Translation
✧ The affair of Rukānah al-Muṭṭalibī and his wrestling with the Prophet ﷺ [The Prophet’s victory over him and the sign of the tree] Ibn Isḥāq said: My father Isḥāq b. Yasār narrated to me, saying: Rukānah b. ʿAbd Yazīd b. Hāshim b. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib b. ʿAbd Manāf was the strongest of Quraysh. One day he was alone with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in one of the mountain passes of Makkah. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him: "O Rukānah, will you not fear Allah and accept what I call you to?" He said: "If I knew that what you say is true, I would follow you." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him: "What if I throw you down? Would you know that what I say is true?" He said: "Yes." He said: "Then rise so that I may wrestle you." He said: Rukānah rose to wrestle him. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ seized him, he laid him flat, and he had no control over himself. Then he said: "Come back, O Muḥammad." He returned and threw him down again. He said: "O Muḥammad, by Allah, this is indeed astonishing! You throw me down?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "And more astonishing than that, if you wish, I will show you, if you fear Allah and follow my command." He said: "What is it?" He said: "I will call this tree that you see, and it will come to me." He said: "Call it." He called it, and it came until it stood before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He said: Then he said to it: "Return to your place." He said: It returned to its place. He said: Rukānah went to his people and said: "O Banū ʿAbd Manāf, enchant with your companion the people of the earth! By Allah, I have never seen anyone more of a sorcerer than him." Then he told them what he had seen and what had happened. Ibn Kathīr, may Allah Almighty have mercy on him, said: Thus Ibn Isḥāq narrated this story in mursal form with this context. Abū Dāwūd and al-Tirmidhī narrated from the ḥadīth of Abū al-Ḥasan al-ʿAsqalānī, from Abū Jaʿfar b. Muḥammad b. Rukānah, from his father, that Rukānah wrestled the Prophet ﷺ and the Prophet ﷺ threw him down. Then al-Tirmidhī said: It is gharīb, and we do not know Abū al-Ḥasan nor Ibn Rukānah. I say: Abū Bakr al-Shāfiʿī narrated with a good isnād from Ibn ʿAbbās ؓ that Yazīd b. Rukānah wrestled the Prophet ﷺ and the Prophet ﷺ threw him down three times, each time for one hundred sheep. When it was the third time, he said: "O Muḥammad, no one has ever put my back on the ground before you, and no one was more hateful to me than you. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that you are the Messenger of Allah." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ left him and returned his sheep to him. As for the story of his calling the tree and it came, it will come in the book "Dalāʾil al-Nubuwwah" after the sīrah, from good, authentic paths on multiple occasions, if Allah wills, and upon Him is reliance.
