The Prophet's ﷺ open proclamation to his people and their response

✧ [THE SPREAD OF THE MENTION OF THE MESSENGER AMONG THE TRIBES, ESPECIALLY AMONG THE AWS AND KHAZRAJ] When the affair of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ spread among the Arabs and reached the lands, it was mentioned in Madinah. There was no clan of the Arabs more knowledgeable of the affair of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when it was mentioned, and before it was mentioned, than this clan of the Aws and Khazraj. That was because of what they used to hear from the rabbis of the Jews, for they were their allies and with them in their lands. When his mention occurred in Madinah, and they spoke of the disagreement among Quraysh concerning him, Abu Qays b. al-Aslat, the brother of Banu Waqif, recited a poem in which he magnified the sacredness, forbade Quraysh from war, commanded them to restrain one another, mentioned their virtue and their forbearance, commanded them to hold back from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, reminded them of God's trial among them, and His repelling the elephant from them and His plotting against them. He said: : O rider, if you are exposed, then convey from me a message sent to Lu'ayy b. Ghalib, A message of a man whom the rift among you has alarmed, Grieving over the distance, weary from that, And he had at my place a resting-place for anxieties, So I did not fulfill from them my need and my desires. We inform you of two parties, every tribe Has a clamor from among kindlers and gatherers of firewood. I seek refuge for you with Allah from the evil of your deeds, And the evil of your mutual envy and the concealing of scorpions, And the display of morals and sickly secret talk, Like the pricks of heated iron, whose falling is a true hitter. So remind them of Allah at the first moment, And of the making lawful of the sacred things of lean gazelles. And say to them, by Allah, He judges with His judgment: Leave war, it will go from you into the wide spaces. Whenever you send it forth, you send it forth blameworthy; It is the ghoul for the farthest or the near ones. It cuts wombs and destroys a nation, And shaves the hump-fat from the camel's hump and withers. And you would exchange for the crimson garment after it A worn-out and rusted one, the garments of the warrior, And for musk and camphor, dusty, ample coats of mail, As if their two rows of rings were the eyes of locusts. So beware of war, let it not cling to you, And a pool of foul water, bitter of drinking-places. It adorns itself for the peoples, then they see it With an end, when it has become clear, the mother of a companion. It burns and does not roast the weak, and it strikes The mighty among you with fatal, accurate blows. Did you not know what was in the war of Dahis, That you might take heed, or what was in the war of Hatib? And how many a noble, honored one has it struck down, Tall of tent-pole, whose guest is not disappointed, 287 Great of fire-ashes, whose command is praised, And of pure character, generous of quarters, And water poured out in error, as if The east wind and the south winds had spread it abroad. A truly knowledgeable man informs you of it, Of its days, and knowledge is the knowledge of experiences. So sell the spears to the warrior, and remember Your reckoning, and Allah is the best of reckoners. The protector of a man who chose a religion, so let not Any watcher over you be other than the Lord of the stars. Establish for us a true religion, for you are For us a goal; guidance may be sought by the forelocks. And you are for these people a light and a protection; You are sought, and forbearance is not absent. And you, when people are weighed, are a jewel; Yours is the center of the valley, high-nosed ones of the rabbit-tribe. You preserve bodies, noble, ancient, Of polished lineages, not mixed. You see the seeker of needs toward your houses As bands of the perishing, guided by bands. The peoples have known that your chiefs Are in every state the best of the people of the assemblies, And the best of them in opinion, and the highest in practice, And the most truthful in speaking the truth amidst the processions. So rise and pray to your Lord and wipe yourselves On the corners of this House among the rugged mountains. For with you from it is a trial and a confirmation, On the morning of Abu Yaksūm, the leader of the battalions. His battalion is in the plain by evening, and his foot-soldiers Are on the hurling ones on the tops of the mountain-passes. So when the help of the Lord of the Throne came to you, they were repelled By the armies of the King, between dust and stones. So they turned away swiftly, fleeing, and no One returned to his family from the Abyssinian except some bands. If you perish, we perish, and the seasons perish by which People live — the saying of a man who is not a liar. Ibn Hisham said: Abu Zayd al-Ansari and others recited to me his verse: "And water poured out," and his verse: "So sell the spears," and his saying: "The protector of a man who chose," and his saying: On the hurling ones on the tops of the mountain-passes. Ibn Hisham said: Abu Qays b. al-Aslat is of Banu Wa'il; and Wa'il, Waqif, and Khatma are brothers of the Aws. [THE POEM OF HAKIM B. UMAYYA IN TURNING HIS PEOPLE AWAY FROM ENMITY TO THE PROPHET ﷺ] Ibn Ishaq said: Hakim b. Umayya b. Haritha b. al-Awqas al-Sulami, ally of Banu Umayya, who had become Muslim, said, restraining his people from what they had agreed upon of enmity to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he was among them a noble, obeyed one: : Is there one who says a saying that is the truth, sitting Upon it, and is there one angry for right guidance, listening, And is there a chief whose tribe hopes for his benefit, Gathering the farthest of clients and relatives? I have declared myself free except to the face of Him who owns the wind, And I will abandon you as long as one lowers the bucket and one contends. And I submit my face to the God and my speech, Even if startling things from a friend alarmed me.
