The Death of Aminah and the Situation of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with His Grandfather ʿAbd al-Muttalib Thereafter

Translation

✧ [Hudhayfah’s Lament for ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib] Ibn Isḥāq said: Ḥudhayfah b. Ghānim, a brother of the Banū ʿAdī b. Kaʿb b. Luʾayy, said, weeping for ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib b. Hāshim b. ʿAbd Manāf, and mentioning his excellence and the excellence of Quṣayy over Quraysh, and the excellence of his descendants after him over them—this because he had been detained for a debt of four thousand dirhams in Makkah, and remained there, and Abū Lahab ʿAbd al-ʿUzzā b. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib passed by him and ransomed him: My two eyes, flow generously with tears upon the chest, and do not weary—may you be given the pouring of rain; and shed tears and pour forth every rising, the weeping of a man whom the calamity of time has not marred. (And pour copiously, abundantly, and flow as long as you both remain) for one possessed of modesty from Quraysh and of a veil, for a man firm of strength, full of protective jealousy, handsome of face, not ignoble, nor a babbler, for the glorious, noble, open-handed one of reach and generosity, the spring of Luʾayy in drought and in hardship, for the best of barefoot and sandaled among Maʿadd, noble in endeavors, good of nature and origin; the best of them in root and branch and source, and the most fortunate of them in honors and in remembrance; the most deserving of them of glory, forbearance, and understanding, and of bounty in the overwhelming misfortunes of the times. For Shaybah al-Ḥamd, whose face used to illuminate the blackness of night like the full moon, and the waterer of the pilgrims; then Hāshim belonged to goodness, and ʿAbd Manāf, that was the sayyid of Fihr. He dug Zamzam near the Maqām, and its drinking-place became a source of pride over every possessor of pride. Let every captive in distress weep for him, and the family of Quṣayy, of the poor and the wealthy. His sons are chiefs, their elders and their youths; from them the egg of the falcon split open. Quṣayy, who opposed all of Kinānah, and guarded the House of God in hardship and ease. If the fates and their turns have carried him off, he lived with a fortunate disposition and command, and he left behind men, lords, not remiss, keen warriors like Rudaynī spears, brown. Abū ʿUtbah, whose tent was pitched for me, bright, pure of color, from a noble band, and Ḥamzah like the full moon, he rises eagerly for generosity, pure of garments and of the due to relatives from treachery, and ʿAbd Manāf, glorious, with protective jealousy, maintaining ties to the near kin, merciful to the in-law. Their elders are the best of elders, and their offspring are like the offspring of kings, they do not perish nor decline. Whenever you meet from them with time a youth, you find him following the course of his forefathers, they filled al-Baṭḥāʾ with glory and might when good deeds were striven for in the bygone age. Among them are builders of eminence and ʿImārah, and ʿAbd Manāf their grandfather, the mender of breaks, by giving his daughter in marriage to ʿAwf to protect us from our enemies when Banū Fihr abandoned us. So we traveled through the lands of Tihāmah and their Najd under his protection until the caravans waded into the sea. They settled while the people were partly nomads, and there was in it none but the elders of Banū ʿAmr. They built it into many abodes and dug therein wells that poured water from the midst of a sea, so that the pilgrims and others might drink from them when they hastened to them on the morning of the day of sacrifice. For three days their riding-camels remained confined between al-Akhāshib and al-Ḥijr. And before that we had long been rich for an age, and we did not draw water except with a bucket or by digging. They forgive the sin for which one would be punished, and they pardon the word of foolishness and foul speech. They gathered the alliance of all the Aḥābīsh, and they punished from us the seducers of Banū Bakr. So go forth; if your people perish, then do not cease to be grateful to them until you are hidden in the grave. And do not forget what the son of Lubnā did, for he indeed did a favor rightly deserving of thanks from you. And you are the son of Lubnā from Quṣayy when they trace descent to where the aim of the heart ends from the chest. And you attained eminence and gathered it to a firm origin of glory, broad of shoulder, you preceded and surpassed the people in giving and in gifts, and you became lord as a child over every possessor of lordship, abundant. And your mother is a secret of Khuzāʿah, a jewel, when the experts of genealogies one day enumerate lineages. To Sabaʾ of the heroes she is traced and attributed; how noble is she, a woman ascribed to the heights of the Zahrah. Abū Shamar is from them, and ʿAmr b. Mālik, and Dhū Jadan from her people, and Abū al-Jabr. And Asʿad led the people for twenty pilgrimages, supported in those stations with victory. Ibn Hishām said: “Your mother is a secret of Khuzāʿah”—he means Abū Lahab; his mother was Lubnā bt. Hājir al-Khuzāʿī. And his saying “following the course of his forefathers” is from someone other than Ibn Isḥāq.
