Translation
✧ [ Arwā's Elegy for Her Father ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib ] Arwā bt. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib said, weeping for her father: : My eyes wept, and they had a right to weep, for a generous man whose nature was modesty, For an easy-natured Abṭaḥī, of noble disposition, whose intent was loftiness, For the overflowing Shaybah, possessor of high virtues, your father, the good, who had no equal, Long of reach, smooth-skinned, a Shayẓamī, a blazing white one, as though his blaze were light, Lean-flanked, one who inspired awe, possessed of excellences, his was the foremost glory and the eminence, A refuser of shame, radiant, a chief, of ancient glory, with no obscurity, And the stronghold of Mālik, and the spring of Fihr, and their decisive judge when judgment was sought, And he was the youth in generosity and liberality, and in courage when blood was shed, When the warriors feared death until the hearts of most of them were as air, He went forward with a spotted, sharp sword, upon which, when you saw it, there was splendor. Ibn Isḥāq said: Muḥammad b. Saʿīd b. al-Musayyib alleged to me that he gestured with his head, having become mute: "Thus, weep for me." [ The Lineage of al-Musayyib ] Ibn Hishām said: Al-Musayyib b. Ḥazn b. Abī Wahb b. ʿAmr b. ʿĀʾidh b. ʿImrān b. Makhzūm.
