Genealogy of Our Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and Some Accounts of His Forefathers and Ancestors

Translation

✧ [Hashim’s assumption of the rifadah and siqayah and what he used to do when the pilgrims arrived] Ibn Ishaq said: Hashim b. ʿAbd Manaf took charge of the rifadah and siqayah. That was because ʿAbd Shams was a man who travelled much and rarely stayed in Makkah. He was a man of little means with many children, while Hashim was wealthy. So—as they assert—when the pilgrims arrived, he would stand before Quraysh and say: “O assembly of Quraysh, you are the neighbours of God and the people of His House. In this season the visitors of God and the pilgrims of His House come to you. They are the guests of God, and the guests most deserving of honour are His guests. So gather for them what you will use to prepare food for them during these days, in which they must stay here. For by God, if my own wealth were sufficient for that, I would not ask it of you.” So they each contributed from their wealth, each man according to what he had, and with it he prepared food for the pilgrims until they departed from there. [Some of Hashim’s acts] Hashim—as they assert—was the first to institute for Quraysh the two journeys: the winter journey and the summer journey, and the first to feed tharid in Makkah. His name was ʿAmr, and he was only called Hashim because of his breaking (hashm) bread in Makkah for his people. A poet of Quraysh, or of some of the Arabs, said: ʿAmr is the one who broke the tharid for his people, people in Makkah afflicted with drought and emaciated. Both the two journeys were instituted for him: the winter journey and the summer journey. Ibn Hisham said: One of the people of knowledge in poetry among the people of the Hijaz recited to me: people in Makkah afflicted with drought and emaciated.
