Genealogy of Our Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and Some Accounts of His Forefathers and Ancestors
[ مَا وَقَعَ بَيْنَ نُفَيْلٍ وَأَبْرَهَةَ ] ثُمَّ مَضَى أَبْرَهَةُ عَلَى وَجْهِهِ ذَلِكَ يُرِيدُ مَا خَرَجَ لَهُ، حَتَّى إذَا كَانَ بِأَرْضِ خَثْعَمَ عَرَضَ لَهُ نُفَيْلُ بْنُ حَبِيبٍ الْخَثْعَمِيُّ فِي قَبيلَيْ خَثْعَمَ: شَهْرَانِ وَنَاهِسُ: وَمَنْ تَبِعَهُ مِنْ قَبَائِلِ الْعَرَبِ، فَقَاتَلَهُ فَهَزَمَهُ أَبْرَهَةُ، وَأُخِذَ لَهُ نُفَيْلٌ أَسِيرًا فَأُتِيَ بِهِ فَلَمَّا هَمَّ بِقَتْلِهِ قَالَ لَهُ نُفَيْلٌ: أَيُّهَا الْمَلِكُ، لَا تَقْتُلْنِي فَإِنِّي دَلِيلُكَ بِأَرْضِ الْعَرَبِ، وَهَاتَانِ يَدَايَ لَكَ عَلَى قبيلَيْ خَثْعَمَ: شَهْرَانِ وَنَاهِسُ بِالسَّمْعِ وَالطَّاعَةِ، فَخَلَّى سَبِيلَهُ.
Translation
✧ [ What happened between Nufayl and Abrahah ] Then Abrahah went on his way, seeking what he had come out for, until when he was in the land of Khathʿam, Nufayl b. Ḥabīb al-Khathʿamī confronted him with the two tribes of Khathʿam—Shahrān and Nāhis—and those who followed him from the Arab tribes. He fought him, but Abrahah defeated him, and Nufayl was taken captive and brought to him. When he intended to kill him, Nufayl said to him: “O king, do not kill me, for I will be your guide in the land of the Arabs, and here are my two hands to you pledging the two tribes of Khathʿam—Shahrān and Nāhis—to hear and obey.” So he let him go.
