✧ [The Conversion of Tubbaʿ to Christianity, His Clothing of the House, His Veneration of It, and Subayʿah's Poetry About That] Ibn Isḥāq said: Tubbaʿ and his people were companions of idols, worshipping them. He turned towards Makkah, for it was on his route to Yemen, until when he was between ʿUsfān and Amaj, a group from Hudhayl b. Mudrikah b. Ilyās b. Muḍar b. Nizār b. Maʿadd came to him and said to him: "O king, shall we not guide you to a ruined treasure-house which the kings before you neglected, containing pearls, chrysolite, rubies, gold, and silver?" He said: "Yes." They said: "A house in Makkah whose people worship it and pray at it." The Hudhalīs only intended his destruction by that, because they knew of the destruction of any king who desired it and transgressed at it. When he had resolved upon what they said, he sent to the two rabbis and asked them about that. They said to him: "The people intended nothing but your destruction and the destruction of your army. We know of no house that God took for Himself on earth other than it, and if you do what they have called you to, you will surely perish, and all who are with you will perish." He said: "So what do you two command me to do when I come to it?" They said: "Do at it what its people do: circumambulate it, venerate it, honor it, shave your head at it, and humble yourself before it until you depart from it." He said: "What prevents you two from doing that?" One of them said: "By God, it is indeed the house of our father Abraham. It is just as we have told you, but its people have come between us and it with the idols they set up around it and the blood they shed at it, and they are impure, people of association"—or as the two said to him. He recognized their sincerity and the truth of their account, so he brought the group from Hudhayl near and cut off their hands and feet. Then he went on until he arrived at Makkah. He circumambulated the House, sacrificed at it, shaved his head, and stayed in Makkah for six days—as they relate—sacrificing there for the people, feeding its inhabitants, and giving them honey to drink. In a dream he was shown that he should clothe the House, so he clothed it with plaited mats. Then he was shown that he should clothe it with something better than that, so he clothed it with Maʿāfir cloth. Then he was shown that he should clothe it with something better than that, so he clothed it with striped Yemeni cloaks and waṣāʾil (striped cloths). Thus Tubbaʿ—as they claim—was the first to clothe the House, and he commended it to his governors from Jurhum, commanding them to purify it and not to bring near it blood, carrion, or miʾlāh, meaning menstrual cloths. He made for it a door and a key. Subayʿah bt. al-Aḥabb b. Zabīnah b. Jadhīmah b. ʿAwf b. Naṣr b. Muʿāwiyah b. Bakr b. Hawāzin b. Manṣūr b. ʿIkrimah b. Khaṣafah b. Qays b. ʿAylān, who was married to ʿAbd Manāf b. Kaʿb b. Saʿd b. Taym b. Murrah b. Kaʿb b. Luʾayy b. Ghālib b. Fihr b. Mālik b. al-Naḍr b. Kinānah, said to a son of hers by him named Khālid, urging upon him the sanctity of Makkah and forbidding him from transgression in it, mentioning Tubbaʿ and his submission to it and what he did with it: "O my son, do not wrong in Makkah, neither the small nor the great; and guard her sacred things, my son, and let not the deceiver deceive you. O my son, whoever wrongs in Makkah will meet the edges of evils; O my son, his face will be struck, and the blaze will glimmer on his cheeks. O my son, I have tried it and found that its wrongdoer perishes; God has made her secure, and no palaces are built in her courtyard. By God, He has secured her birds, and the mountain goats are safe in Thabīr; Tubbaʿ indeed raided her, and he clothed her structure with fine striped cloth. My Lord humbled his dominion in it, so he fulfilled his vows; walking to her barefoot, in her courtyard two thousand camels; and he kept feeding her people the flesh of fine she-camels and slaughtered beasts; giving them to drink strained honey and washed barley; and the elephant—its army was destroyed, pelted in it with stones; and dominion is in the farthest lands, among the non-Arabs and the Khazīr; so listen when you are told, and understand how the outcome of matters is." Ibn Hishām said: One stops at the rhymes of her verses; they are not inflected.
