Genealogy of Our Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and Some Accounts of His Forefathers and Ancestors
[ أَصْلُ الْعَرَبِ ] قَالَ ابْنُ هِشَامٍ: فَالْعَرَبُ كُلُّهَا مِنْ وَلَدِ إسْمَاعِيلَ وَقَحْطَانَ. وَبَعْضُ أَهْلِ الْيَمَنِ يَقُولُ: قَحْطَانُ مِنْ وَلَدِ إسْمَاعِيلَ، وَيَقُولُ: إسْمَاعِيلُ أَبُو الْعَرَبِ كُلِّهَا. قَالَ ابْنُ إسْحَاقَ: عَادُ بْنُ عَوْصِ بْنِ إرَمِ بْنِ سَامِ بْنِ نُوحٍ، وَثَمُودُ وَجُدَيْسٌ ابْنَا عَابِرِ، بْنِ إرَمِ بْنِ سَامِ بْنِ نُوحٍ، وطَسْمُ وَعِمْلَاقُ وَأُمَيْمُ بَنُو لَاوِذْ بْنِ سَامِ بْنِ نُوحٍ: عَرَبٌ كُلُّهُمْ. فَوَلَدَ نَابِتُ بْنُ إسْمَاعِيلَ: يَشْجُبَ بْنَ نَابِتٍ، فَوَلَدَ يَشْجُبُ: يَعْرُبَ بْنَ يَشْجُبَ، فَوَلَدَ يَعْرُبُ: تَيْرَحَ بْنَ يَعْرُبَ، فَوَلَدَ تَيْرَحُ: نَاحُورَ بْنَ تَيْرَحَ، فَوَلَدَ نَاحُورُ: مُقَوِّمَ بْنَ نَاحُورٍ، فَوَلَدَ مُقَوِّمُ: أُدَدَ بْنَ مُقَوِّمٍ، فَوَلَدَ أُدَدُ: عَدْنَانَ بْنَ أُدَدَ. قَالَ ابْنُ هِشَامٍ: وَيُقَالُ: عَدْنَانُ بْنُ أُدٍّ.
Translation
✧ [The Origin of the Arabs] Ibn Hishām said: All the Arabs are from the descendants of Ismāʿīl and Qaḥṭān. Some of the people of Yemen say: Qaḥṭān is one of the descendants of Ismāʿīl, and they say: Ismāʿīl is the father of all the Arabs. Ibn Isḥāq said: ʿĀd b. ʿAwṣ b. Iram b. Sām b. Nūḥ, and Thamūd and Judays the two sons of ʿĀbir b. Iram b. Sām b. Nūḥ, and Ṭasm, ʿImlāq, and Umaym the sons of Lāwidh b. Sām b. Nūḥ: they are all Arabs. And Nābit b. Ismāʿīl begot Yashjub b. Nābit, and Yashjub begot Yaʿrub b. Yashjub, and Yaʿrub begot Tayraḥ b. Yaʿrub, and Tayraḥ begot Nāḥūr b. Tayraḥ, and Nāḥūr begot Muqawwim b. Nāḥūr, and Muqawwim begot Udad b. Muqawwim, and Udad begot ʿAdnān b. Udad. Ibn Hishām said: And it is said: ʿAdnān b. Udd.
