Translation

✧ Then the year 377 AH began. Among the events in it: The vizier Abū Manṣūr Muḥammad b. al-Ḥasan arrived, and he was received by the commanders, the chamberlains, the retainers, the secretaries, and the notables of the people of Baghdād. When he drew near, Sharaf al-Dawlah met him at al-Shafīʿī on Saturday, six nights having passed of Muḥarram. In his company there arrived twenty thousand thousand dirhams, and garments, and many accoutrements. Goodness and preference for justice predominated in him, and when he heard the call to prayer he abandoned all his occupations and devoted himself to performing his obligation. He frequently appointed [and dismissed] and did not leave an agent to remain in a district for a year. On the second Saturday of Rabīʿ al-Awwal, Sharaf al-Dawlah rode to the palace of al-Ṭāʾiʿ li-llāh in the flyboat after pavilions had been pitched on the bank of the Tigris and the dwellings along it on both sides had been adorned in the finest manner. He was invested with the sultanic robes of honor, and he was crowned, and he was collared, and he was bracelet-ed, and two banners were bound for him, and he was made his deputy over what lay beyond his gate, and his covenant was read audibly to him and to the people according to their ranks. Then he departed from his presence and entered to his sister, the wife of al-Ṭāʾiʿ, and he stayed with her until the afternoon and then departed, while the army and the people remained waiting for him. When he carried the banner, it tore and a piece of it fell away, and he took that as an ill omen. Al-Ṭāʾiʿ said to him: "It did not tear; rather a piece of it separated and the wind carried it away. The interpretation of this occurrence is that you will rule the quarter from which the winds blow." Among those present with Sharaf al-Dawlah was Abū Muḥammad ʿUbayd Allāh b. Aḥmad b. Maʿrūf. When al-Ṭāʾiʿ li-llāh saw him, he said to him: Welcome to the beloved ones who are arriving; they made us lonely, and how long they had kept us company. So he kissed the ground, gave thanks, and prayed. Sharaf al-Dawlah sat in his palace for congratulations on Monday, four nights having passed of the month, wearing the robes of honor, with two banners planted before him, one white and one black. The common people and the elite came to him. Sharaf al-Dawlah restored to the sharīf Abū al-Ḥasan Muḥammad b. ʿUmar all his properties, and the land tax of his properties each year amounted to two thousand thousand and five hundred thousand dirhams. He restored to the sharīf Abū Aḥmad al-Mūsawī all his properties, and he abolished the practice of confiscations and blocked the paths of informers. In Shaʿbān, two male children were born to Sharaf al-Dawlah, twins. He gave one of them the kunyah Abū Ḥarb and named him Salār, and the other the kunyah Abū Manṣūr and named him Fanākhusraw. In it, al-Ṣāḥib b. ʿAbbād marched to Ṭabaristān, set it right, expelled the usurpers from it, and conquered several fortresses, among them the fortress of Quraym, and returned in the same year. In it, the amīr Abū Manṣūr b. Kūrīkanj, the lord of Qazwīn, rebelled against Fakhr al-Dawlah. Fakhr al-Dawlah dealt gently with him and offered him safe conduct and favor, so he returned to his obedience. In it, in Ramaḍān, a severe disturbance occurred between the Daylamites and the common people in the city of Mosul, in which a great slaughter took place; then the situation was set right between the two factions. In it, the rain was delayed until the middle of January, and prices rose high in Iraq and the lands adjoining it. The people prayed for rain twice but were not given rain, until rain came on the seventeenth of January, and despair ceased, and rains followed one another. On Saturday, two nights remaining of Rabīʿ al-Ākhir, the mother of Sharaf al-Dawlah died. She was a Turkish woman, an umm walad. Al-Ṭāʾiʿ li-llāh rode to him by water to console him for her.
