Tarikh (al-Tabari) 4283

Then the year 359 AH began

Translation

✧ In this year the king of the Byzantines entered Tripoli, burning much of it, and took the citadel of ʿArqah, plundering it and taking its people captive. In its citadel was the lord of Tripoli, who had sought refuge there when the people of Tripoli expelled him because of his extreme oppression; the Byzantines captured him and seized all his wealth and treasures, which were very great. Then they turned upon the coasts, taking eighteen minbars besides the villages, and many people became Christians at their hands, may God Almighty curse them. They came to Homs, burning and plundering. The king of the Byzantines remained two months taking what he wished of the lands and capturing whom he could of the people, and he acquired great awe in the hearts of the people. Then he returned to his country with about one hundred thousand boys and girls among the captives. The reason for his return to his country was the abundance of diseases in his army and their longing for their children, families, and homelands.
