✧ Mention of the army of al-Muʿizz taking Damascus and other lands of Syria When Jawhar had become established in Egypt and had secured his footing, he dispatched Jaʿfar b. Falāḥ al-Kutāmī to Syria with a large force. He reached al-Ramlah, where Abū Muḥammad al-Ḥasan b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Ṭughj was, and fought him in Dhū al-Ḥijjah of that year. Battles took place between them in which Jaʿfar b. Falāḥ was victorious, and Ibn Ṭughj and other commanders were captured. He sent them to Jawhar, and Jawhar sent them to al-Muʿizz in Ifrīqiyyah. Ibn al-Falāḥ entered the town by force, killing many of its inhabitants, then granted safety to those who remained, levied the land tax, and marched to Ṭabariyyah. There he saw that Ibn Mulham had already established the daʿwah for al-Muʿizz li-Dīn Allāh, so he left it and went to Damascus. Its people fought him, but he defeated them and took possession of the city, plundering part of it and refraining from the rest. He established the khuṭbah for al-Muʿizz on Friday, some days into Muḥarram of the year fifty-nine [and three hundred], and the Abbasid khuṭbah was discontinued. In Damascus there was the sharīf Abū al-Qāsim b. Abī Yaʿlā al-Hāshimī, a man of great standing whose authority among its people was effective. He gathered its young men and those who sought sedition, and rose up with them on the second Friday, abolished the khuṭbah for al-Muʿizz li-Dīn Allāh, and restored the khuṭbah of al-Muṭīʿ li-llāh. He donned black and returned to his house. Jaʿfar b. Falāḥ and his men fought him fiercely, and the people of Damascus held firm. Then they dispersed at the end of the day. On the morrow the two sides advanced against each other and fought, and war broke out between them. Many were killed on both sides and the fighting continued. The army of Damascus returned in defeat while the sharīf Ibn Abī Yaʿlā stood at the gate of the city urging the people to fight and commanding them to be steadfast. The Maghribis kept up their assaults on the Damascenes until they drove them back to the gate of the city. The Maghribis reached the palace of Ḥajjāj and plundered what they found. When Ibn Abī Yaʿlā al-Hāshimī and the young men saw what the people were suffering at the hands of the Maghribis, they left the city by night. In the morning the people were bewildered. The sharīf al-Jaʿfarī, who had gone out from the city to Jaʿfar b. Falāḥ to negotiate peace, entered, and Jaʿfar sent him back, ordering him to calm the people, reassure them, and promise them good treatment. He did as he was commanded, and instructed the soldiers and the common people to remain in their homes and not to leave them until Jaʿfar b. Falāḥ entered the city, made a circuit through it, and returned to his camp. They did so. When the Maghribis entered the city they spread corruption in it and plundered a portion of it. The people rose up, attacked them, and put them to the sword, killing a group of them. They set about fortifying the city and digging trenches, and resolved to face the heat of war and expend their lives in its defense. The Maghribis held back from them, and the people went to the sharīf Abū al-Qāsim b. Abī Yaʿlā and asked him to strive for an outcome that would restore order. He did so and managed the matter until peace was concluded on Thursday, sixteen days into Dhū al-Ḥijjah of the year fifty-nine and three hundred. The fire had consumed a great number of houses during the war. The prefect of police, Jaʿfar b. Falāḥ, entered the city on Friday, prayed with the people, calmed them, and reassured them. He arrested a group of the young men in Muḥarram of the year sixty and three hundred, and arrested the aforementioned sharīf Abū al-Qāsim b. Abī Yaʿlā al-Hāshimī and sent him to Egypt. Thus the affairs of Damascus became settled. (It would have been appropriate to defer) (Ibn al-Falāḥ's taking of Damascus to the end of the year), but I have brought it forward so that the account of the Maghribis may be connected one part to another.
