Then the year 358 AH began

✧ Account of the disagreement among the sons of Nāṣir al-Dawlah and the death of their father The reason for the disagreement among the sons of Nāṣir al-Dawlah was that he had granted his son Ḥamdān the city of al-Raḥbah, Māridīn, and others. Abū Taghlib, Abū al-Barakāt, and their sister were the children of Nāṣir al-Dawlah from his wife Fāṭimah bt. Aḥmad al-Kurdiyyah, who held control over Nāṣir al-Dawlah's affairs. She agreed with her son Abū Taghlib, and they seized Nāṣir al-Dawlah, as we have mentioned. Nāṣir al-Dawlah then began plotting to seize them, so he wrote to his son Ḥamdān summoning him to strengthen himself against them. His sons intercepted the letter, did not deliver it, and feared and were wary of their father. Their fear of him led them to transfer him to the fortress of Kawāshī. That reached Ḥamdān, and it weighed heavily upon him. He became a clear enemy, and he was the bravest of them. He had marched at the death of his uncle Sayf al-Dawlah from al-Raḥbah to al-Raqqah and taken possession of it, then marched to Naṣībīn, gathered those who obeyed him, and demanded that his brothers release his father and restore him to his home. Abū Taghlib marched against him to fight him, but Ḥamdān fled before the encounter to al-Raqqah. Abū Taghlib encamped against him and besieged him, then they made peace on uncertain terms, and each of them returned to his own place. Nāṣir al-Dawlah al-Ḥasan b. Abī al-Hayjāʾ ʿAbd Allāh b. Ḥamdān b. Ḥamdūn al-Taghlibī lived for some months and died in Rabīʿ al-Awwal of the year 358 AH, and was buried at Tall Tawbah, east of al-Mawṣil. Abū Taghlib seized the estates of his brother Ḥamdān and sent his brother Abū al-Barakāt against Ḥamdān. When he approached al-Raḥbah, many of Ḥamdān's companions sought safety with him, so Ḥamdān fled and headed to Iraq seeking safety with Bakhtiyār. He reached Baghdād in Ramaḍān of the year 358 AH. Bakhtiyār honoured and esteemed him, and sent him a large and magnificent gift along with everything that someone like him needed. He sent the Naqīb Abū Aḥmad al-Mūsawī, father of al-Sharīf al-Raḍī, to Abū Taghlib to make peace with his brother. They made peace, and Ḥamdān returned to al-Raḥbah. His departure from Baghdād was in Jumādā al-Ūlā of the year 359 AH. When Abū al-Barakāt heard of his brother Ḥamdān's march in this manner, he left al-Raḥbah, and Ḥamdān entered it. His brother Abū Taghlib corresponded with him requesting a meeting, but he refused. Abū Taghlib returned and sent his brother Abū al-Barakāt against him. When Ḥamdān learned of that, he left it, and Abū al-Barakāt took possession of it, appointed a deputy to guard it with a contingent of the army, and returned to al-Raqqah and then to ʿArabān. When Ḥamdān, who was in the desert of Tadmur, heard of his return from it, he went back to it in Shaʿbān and arrived there by night. He had a group of his servants climb the wall, and they opened the town gate for him, and he entered while none of the soldiers there knew. When he was in the town and morning came, he ordered the trumpet to be sounded. The soldiers in al-Raḥbah rushed out in scattered groups, thinking that the sound of the trumpet came from outside the town. Everyone who reached Ḥamdān was captured, until he had taken them all. He killed some and spared others. When Abū al-Barakāt heard of that, he returned to Qarqīsiyā, and he and his brother Ḥamdān met alone. No agreement was reached between them, so Abū al-Barakāt said to Ḥamdān, "I will return to ʿArabān, and send to Abū Taghlib to respond to what you request of him." He departed returning to ʿArabān, and Ḥamdān crossed the Euphrates at a ford there and marched in pursuit of his brother Abū al-Barakāt. He caught up with him at ʿArabān while he was unsuspecting. Abū al-Barakāt met them without armour or weapons and fought them. The fighting intensified between them, and Abū al-Barakāt charged personally into their midst. His brother Ḥamdān struck him and threw him down, and took him prisoner. He died that same day, which was the third of Ramaḍān. He was carried in a coffin to al-Mawṣil and buried at Tall Tawbah beside his father. Abū Taghlib prepared to march against Ḥamdān and sent his brother Abū al-Fawāris Muḥammad ahead to Naṣībīn. When he arrived there, he corresponded with his brother Ḥamdān and conspired against Abū Taghlib. The news reached Abū Taghlib, so he sent for him, summoning him to increase his fief. When he came before him, he seized him and sent him to the fortress of Kawāshī in the territory of al-Mawṣil, and took his wealth, whose value was five hundred thousand dinars. When he seized him, Ibrāhīm and al-Ḥusayn, the sons of Nāṣir al-Dawlah, marched to their brother Ḥamdān out of fear of Abū Taghlib. They joined him, and they marched to Sinjār. Abū Taghlib marched against them from al-Mawṣil in Ramaḍān of the year 360 AH. They had no strength to meet him, so his brothers Ibrāhīm and al-Ḥusayn corresponded with him requesting to return to him as a ruse to make him feel safe and then assassinate him. He agreed to that, so they fled to him, and many of Ḥamdān's companions followed them. Ḥamdān then returned from Sinjār to ʿArabān and sought safety with Abū Taghlib. A companion of Ḥamdān informed him of his brothers' plot against him, namely Ibrāhīm and al-Ḥusayn. He intended to seize them, but they became wary and fled. Then Ḥamdān's servant and deputy in al-Raḥbah took all his wealth and fled to Abū Taghlib's followers in Ḥarrān, who were with his companion Salāmah al-Barqaʿīdī. Ḥamdān was forced to return to al-Raḥbah. Abū Taghlib marched to Qarqīsiyā and sent a raiding party that crossed the Euphrates and fell upon Ḥamdān in al-Raḥbah while he was unaware. He escaped fleeing, and Abū Taghlib took possession of it, rebuilt its wall, and returned to al-Mawṣil, entering it in Dhū al-Ḥijjah of the year 360 AH. Ḥamdān marched to Baghdād and entered it at the end of Dhū al-Ḥijjah of the year 360 AH, seeking refuge with Bakhtiyār, accompanied by his brother Ibrāhīm. Their brother al-Ḥusayn had returned to his brother Abū Taghlib seeking safety. Bakhtiyār sent Ḥamdān and his brother Ibrāhīm magnificent gifts and honoured and esteemed them.
