✧ Mention of the notables who died in this year 2653 - Aḥmad b. Buwayh, Abū al-Ḥusayn, titled Muʿizz al-Dawlah. We have already mentioned the reports of Buwayh and his sons in the year 322 AH, and that Aḥmad b. Buwayh used to gather firewood on his head, then they came to possess the lands and took control of them. We have mentioned the circumstances of Abū al-Ḥusayn b. Buwayh and his arrival in Baghdad in the year 334 AH, his entrance upon al-Mustakfī, his carrying al-Mustakfī to his residence, and other matters of his affairs, except that he was taken up to Baghdad and left behind in Wāsiṭ his army, his pages, and the great chamberlain Subuktikīn, on the understanding that he would return after twenty days to Wāsiṭ. He fell ill in Baghdad and was afflicted with looseness of the bowels and weakness, and food would not stay in his stomach. He entrusted the covenant to his son Bakhtiyār, and when death descended upon him he ordered that he be carried to the House of Gold. He summoned one of the scholars and repented at his hand. When the time of prayer came, that man went out to a mosque to pray in it. Muʿizz al-Dawlah said to him: "Why do you not pray here?" He said: "Prayer in this house is not valid." He asked him about the Companions, and he mentioned their merits and that ʿAlī ﷺ married his daughter Umm Kulthūm to ʿUmar b. [al-Khaṭṭāb]. He deemed that momentous and said: "I did not know this." He gave away most of his wealth in charity, manumitted his slaves, returned many things taken unjustly, and wept until he fainted. Abū al-Ḥusayn b. al-Shaybah al-ʿAlawī related, saying: While I was in my house on the Tigris at the landing place of the reeds on a night of clouds, thunder, and lightning, I heard the voice of one calling out, saying: When you attained, Abū al-Ḥusayn, what your soul desired in seeking, and you felt secure from the happenings of the nights, and you veiled yourself from calamities, the hand of death was stretched out to you, and you were taken from the House of Gold. I noted the time, and it was four hours having passed of the night of Tuesday, the seventeenth of Rabīʿ al-Ākhir, in the year 356 AH. Then the rain continued for some days, and when the clouds cleared and people spread out, the news became widespread that Muʿizz al-Dawlah had died on that night. His rule was twenty-one years and eleven months, and his age was fifty-three years. He had blocked the mouth of the Rufayl Canal, dug the Nahrawān canals, constructed the drainage outlet at al-Sindiyyah, and restored the ḥasharī inheritances to the kin. 2654 - Ḥāmid b. Muḥammad b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Muḥammad b. Muʿādh, Abū ʿAlī al-Raffāʾ al-Harawī. He heard in Baghdad, al-Kūfah, Makkah, Ḥulwān, Hamadhān, al-Rayy, and Naysābūr. Then he came to Baghdad and related, and people heard from him by the selection of al-Dāraquṭnī. He was trustworthy, and he died in Herat in Ramaḍān of this year. 2655 - ʿAbd al-Khāliq b. al-Ḥasan b. Muḥammad b. [Naṣr], Abū Muḥammad al-Saqaṭī. He heard al-Bāghandī; Ibn Rizqawayh narrated from him. He was trustworthy, one of the accredited witnesses, and al-Barqānī used to praise him and deem him trustworthy. He died in Rajab of this year. 2656 - ʿUmar b. Jaʿfar b. Muḥammad b. Salm, Abū al-Fatḥ al-Khuttalī. He was born in the year 271 AH, and heard al-Ḥārith b. Abī Usāmah, al-Kudaymī, and al-Ḥarbī. Ibn Rizqawayh narrated from him. He was trustworthy and righteous. He died in Shaʿbān of this year, being trustworthy, and was buried in the cemetery of al-Khayzurān. 2657 - ʿUthmān b. Muḥammad b. Bishr, Abū ʿUmar al-Saqaṭī, known as Ibn Shanqah. He was born in the year 299 AH, and related from Ismāʿīl al-Qāḍī and Ibrāhīm al-Ḥarbī. Ibn Rizqawayh narrated from him; people wrote from him by the selection of al-Dāraquṭnī. Marwān, Abū al-Faraj al-Aṣbahānī al-Kātib. He related from Muḥammad b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Ḥaḍramī Muṭayyan and from many others. The dominant feature of his transmission is reports and belles-lettres. He was knowledgeable in the battle-days of the people and biographies, and he was a poet. He composed many books, among them "al-Aghānī" and the book "Ayyām al-ʿArab," in which he mentioned one thousand seven hundred battle-days. Al-Dāraquṭnī narrated from him. He was inclined to Shīʿism, and the like of him is not to be trusted in his transmission, for he plainly states in his books what entails impiety for him, and he makes light of drinking wine, and sometimes he recounts that of himself. Whoever examines the book "al-Aghānī" will see every vile and reprehensible thing. He died in Dhū al-Ḥijjah of this year. 2659 - ʿAlī b. ʿAbd Allāh, titled Sayf al-Dawlah, died in Ṣafar of this year of difficulty in urination. 2660 - Muḥammad b. Aḥmad b. Muḥammad b. Aḥmad b. He died in Ṣafar of this year and was buried in the cemetery of Bāb Ḥarb. 2661 - Muḥammad b. Ibrāhīm b. Muḥammad b. Khālid b. ʿĪsā, Abū al-ʿAbbās, known as al-Shayrajī, of Marwazī origin. He heard Jaʿfar b. Muḥammad al-Firyābī, and Ibn Rizqawayh narrated from him. Muḥammad b. Abī al-Fawāris said: Abū al-ʿAbbās Muḥammad b. Ibrāhīm al-Marwazī died with nine nights remaining of Dhū al-Ḥijjah in the year 356 AH. He was a trustworthy and upright shaykh, no harm in him. 2662 - Muḥammad b. Ibrāhīm b. Aḥmad b. Ibrāhīm al-Farawī, heard Abū Muslim al-Kajjī, and Abū Nuʿaym al-Aṣbahānī narrated from him. Abū Nuʿaym said: This shaykh is one of the descendants of Isḥāq b. Abī Farwah, and he was a shaykh of fine appearance, and he is trustworthy. 2664 - Muḥammad b. Ibrāhīm b. al-ʿAbbās b. al-Fuḍayl, Abū al-Yusr al-Mawṣilī. He came to Baghdad in the year 362 AH, and related there from Abū Yaʿlā al-Mawṣilī the book "Muʿjam Shuyūkhih," and Muḥammad b. Abī al-Fawāris heard [from him]. 2665 - Yūsuf b. ʿUmar b. Abī ʿUmar Muḥammad b. Yūsuf b. Yaʿqūb b. Ismāʿīl b. Ḥammād b. Zayd, Abū Naṣr al-Azdī. He was born in the year 305 AH. He held the judgeship in "Madīnat al-Salām" during the lifetime of his father and after his death. He never ceased to be a chief, chaste, [honest], noble, excelling in belles-lettres and epistolary writing, eloquent, knowledgeable in lexicography and poetry, full of dignity. No judge is known who was more knowledgeable in adjudication than he and his brother Abū al-Ḥusayn, for both of them held the judgeship in the capital, as did their father ʿUmar, their grandfather Muḥammad, and his father Yūsuf. As for Yaʿqūb, he held the judgeship of the city of our master the Messenger of God ﷺ, then he assumed /Fārs. Abū Naṣr continued to be governor over all of Baghdad [in the time of] al-Rāḍī until the year in which al-Rāḍī died, [for he dismissed him from Madīnat al-Manṣūr in favor of his brother al-Ḥusayn and confirmed him over the eastern side and al-Karkh. When al-Rāḍī died], he was dismissed from the judgeship in Baghdad and Muḥammad b. ʿĪsā, known as [Ibn] Abī Mūsā al-Ḍarīr, assumed it. Al-Tanūkhī said: Abū al-Ḥasan Aḥmad b. ʿAlī al-Battī recited, saying: Abū Naṣr Yūsuf b. ʿUmar al-Qāḍī recited for himself: O tribulation of God, desist; if you do not desist, then lighten. Is it not time that you have mercy on us from the length of this gloating? I went seeking my fortune, and it was said to me: It has died. A bull reaches the Pleiades, while a learned man is hidden. Praise be to God in thanks for the purity of my letter. Abū Naṣr died in Dhū al-Qaʿdah of this year. Among the notables who died in it: Ismāʿīl b. al-Qāsim b. ʿAydhūn b. Hārūn b. ʿĪsā b. Muḥammad b. Sulaymān, Abū ʿAlī al-Qālī, the lexicographer, the Umayyad, their client; because this Sulaymān was a client of ʿAbd al-Malik b. Marwān. Al-Qālī is an ascription to Qālīqilā, and it is said that it is Arzan al-Rūm, but God knows best. He was born in Manāzjird in the land of al-Jazīrah, in Diyār Bakr. He heard ḥadīth from Abū Yaʿlā al-Mawṣilī and others, and took grammar and lexicography from Ibn Durayd, Abū Bakr b. al-Anbārī, Nifṭawayh, and others. He composed "al-Amālī," which is well-known, and the book "al-Bāriʿ" arranged according to the letters of the alphabet, in five thousand folios, and other works on lexicography. He entered Baghdad and heard there, then traveled to Cordoba and entered it in the year 330 AH, settled there, and composed many books there, until he died in it in this year at the age of sixty-eight. Thus said Ibn Khillikān. In it died Abū ʿAlī Muḥammad b. Ilyās, ruler of the lands of Kirmān and its districts. ʿAḍud al-Dawlah b. Rukn al-Dawlah took the lands of Kirmān from the sons of Muḥammad b. Ilyās, who were three: al-Yasaʿ, Ilyās, and Sulaymān. And the great king Wushmakīr, as we have previously mentioned in this year. Among the kings who died in it: Al-Ḥasan b. al-Fīrazān, ruler of the lands of Jurjān, and Muʿizz al-Dawlah b. Buwayh al-Daylamī, as previously mentioned.
