Translation

✧ Mention of what happened anew in Oman and Muʿizz al-Dawlah's seizure of it We have mentioned in the year before this the report of Oman and the Qarāmiṭah's entry into it, and Nāfiʿ's flight from it. When Nāfiʿ fled and the Qarāmiṭah seized the town, there was with them a secretary known as ʿAlī b. Aḥmad who looked after the affairs of the town. In Oman there was a judge who had a clan and standing, and he and the people of the town agreed to appoint as commander a man known as Ibn Ṭughān, who was among the lesser commanders in Oman and the lowest of them in rank. When he was established (in the command), he feared those commanders above him, so he seized eighty commanders, killing some of them and drowning others. Two nephews of a man whom he had drowned came to the town, and they stayed for a time. Then one day during the days of salutation they entered upon Ṭughān and greeted him, and when the assembly broke up they killed him. The people's opinion settled on appointing ʿAbd al-Wahhāb b. Aḥmad b. Marwān, who was one of the judge's relatives, and he assumed the command after refusing it. He appointed as his secretary ʿAlī b. Aḥmad, the one who had been with the Hajarīs. ʿAbd al-Wahhāb ordered his secretary ʿAlī to give the troops their stipends as a gift, and he did so. When he came to the Zanj, who numbered six thousand men (and they possessed strength and fierceness), ʿAlī said to them: "The emir ʿAbd al-Wahhāb ordered me to give the white troops such-and-such, and he ordered for you half of that." They became agitated and refused, so he said to them: "Would you pledge allegiance to me so that I give you the like of the rest of the troops?" They agreed to that and pledged allegiance to him, and he gave them the like of the white troops. The white troops refused that, and war broke out between them. The Zanj prevailed over them, and they submitted and came to terms with the Zanj, expelling ʿAbd al-Wahhāb from the town. Thus ʿAlī b. Aḥmad became established in the command. Then Muʿizz al-Dawlah marched to Wāsiṭ to fight ʿImrān b. Shāhīn and to send an army to Oman. When he reached Wāsiṭ, Nāfiʿ al-Aswad, who had been the ruler of Oman, came to him, and he treated him well. He stayed to finish the matter of ʿImrān b. Shāhīn, as we shall mention, God Almighty willing. He went down from Wāsiṭ to al-Ubullah in the month of Ramaḍān, and stayed there equipping the army and the ships to march to Oman. He finished that, and they marched in the middle of Shawwāl. He appointed over them Abū al-Faraj Muḥammad b. al-ʿAbbās b. Fasānjis, and they were in one hundred vessels. When they were at Sīrāf, the army that ʿAḍud al-Dawlah had equipped from Fārs as reinforcement for his uncle Muʿizz al-Dawlah joined them, and they gathered and marched to Oman. They entered it on the ninth of Dhū al-Ḥijjah, and the khuṭbah was pronounced for Muʿizz al-Dawlah there. He killed a great number of its people, and their ships—eighty-nine vessels—were burned.
