✧ Mention of Muʿizz al-Dawlah's taking possession of al-Mawṣil and his withdrawal from it In this year, in Rajab, Muʿizz al-Dawlah marched from Baghdādh to al-Mawṣil and took possession of it. The reason for that was that a peace settlement had been established between Nāṣir al-Dawlah and Muʿizz al-Dawlah on the basis of one million dirhams, which Nāṣir al-Dawlah was to deliver every year. When the assent came from Muʿizz al-Dawlah, Nāṣir al-Dawlah offered an increase so that the oath would also be for his son Abū Taghlib Faḍl Allāh al-Ghaḍanfar along with him, and that Muʿizz al-Dawlah should swear to both of them. He was not granted that, and Muʿizz al-Dawlah made preparations and marched to al-Mawṣil in Jumādā al-Ākhirah. When he drew near to it, Nāṣir al-Dawlah marched to Naṣībīn, and Muʿizz al-Dawlah reached al-Mawṣil and took possession of it in Rajab. He then marched in pursuit of Nāṣir al-Dawlah on the eleventh of Shaʿbān, and he appointed as his deputy over al-Mawṣil Abū al-ʿAlāʾ Ṣāʿid b. Thābit to transport the crops and collect the land tax. He left behind Baktūzūn and Subuktikīn al-ʿAjamī with an army to guard the city. When Muʿizz al-Dawlah drew near to Naṣībīn, Nāṣir al-Dawlah departed from it, and Muʿizz al-Dawlah took possession of Naṣībīn. He did not know which direction Nāṣir al-Dawlah had taken, so he feared that he might go against him toward al-Mawṣil. He therefore returned from Naṣībīn toward al-Mawṣil, leaving behind in it men to guard it. Abū Taghlib b. Nāṣir al-Dawlah had made for al-Mawṣil and fought against some of Muʿizz al-Dawlah's followers, and the turn of fortune was against him. He withdrew after burning the ships belonging to Muʿizz al-Dawlah and his followers. When the news of his followers' victory reached Muʿizz al-Dawlah, his mind was set at rest, and he stayed at Barqaʿīd awaiting news of Nāṣir al-Dawlah. He learned that Nāṣir al-Dawlah had encamped at Jazīrat Ibn ʿUmar, so he departed from Barqaʿīd toward it and reached it on the sixth of Ramaḍān. He did not find Nāṣir al-Dawlah there, so he took possession of it and inquired about Nāṣir al-Dawlah. He was told that he was at al-Ḥasaniyyah, but that was not the case. Rather, Nāṣir al-Dawlah, his sons, and his troops had assembled and marched toward al-Mawṣil. He fell upon those of Muʿizz al-Dawlah's followers who were in it, killing many of them and taking many prisoners. Among the prisoners were Abū al-ʿAlāʾ, Subuktikīn, and Baktūzūn. He seized all that Muʿizz al-Dawlah had left behind of money, weapons, and other things, and all of it was carried off with the prisoners to the fortress of Kūwāshā. When Muʿizz al-Dawlah heard what Nāṣir al-Dawlah had done, he marched against him. Nāṣir al-Dawlah then departed to Sinjār. When Muʿizz al-Dawlah arrived and learned of Nāṣir al-Dawlah's march to Sinjār, he returned to Naṣībīn. Abū Taghlib b. Nāṣir al-Dawlah marched to al-Mawṣil and encamped outside it near the Upper Monastery, without molesting anyone of Muʿizz al-Dawlah's followers who was in it. When Muʿizz al-Dawlah heard of Abū Taghlib's encampment at al-Mawṣil, he marched there. Abū Taghlib departed from it and made for al-Zābb, where he stayed. He corresponded with Muʿizz al-Dawlah regarding peace. Muʿizz al-Dawlah granted his request because he knew that whenever he left al-Mawṣil, they would return and take possession of it, and whenever he stayed there he would remain in constant back-and-forth while they raided the surrounding districts. So he granted what Abū Taghlib sought, and concluded with him the guarantee of al-Mawṣil, Diyār Rabīʿah, al-Raḥbah, and whatever had been in his father's hand for a sum of money that he fixed, and on condition that he release the prisoners held by them. The arrangements were settled on that basis, and Muʿizz al-Dawlah departed to Baghdādh. With him on this journey was Thābit b. Sinān b. Thābit b. Qurrah.
