Translation

✧ Then the year 353 AH began. Mention of the rebellion of Najā, his killing, and Sayf al-Dawlah's taking possession of part of Armenia. We have already mentioned in the year 352 AH what Najā, the ghulām of Sayf al-Dawlah b. Ḥamdān, did to the people of Ḥarrān and what he took of their wealth. When those funds had accumulated with him, he grew strong through them and became insolent; he did not thank the patron of his blessing but rather was ungrateful to him. He marched to Mayyāfāriqīn and headed for the lands of Armenia. A man of the Arabs known as Abū al-Ward had seized control of much of it, so Najā fought him, Abū al-Ward was killed, and Najā took his fortresses and his lands: Khilāṭ, Malāzkard, Mūsh, and others. He obtained a great quantity of Abū al-Ward's wealth, and he openly rebelled against Sayf al-Dawlah. It happened that Muʿizz al-Dawlah b. Buwayh marched from Baghdādh to al-Mawṣil and Naṣībīn, took possession of them, and expelled Nāṣir al-Dawlah from them, as we have just mentioned. Najā wrote to him and corresponded with him while he was in Naṣībīn, promising him support and assistance against his patrons, the Banū Ḥamdān. When Muʿizz al-Dawlah returned to Baghdādh and he and Nāṣir al-Dawlah made peace, Sayf al-Dawlah marched against Najā to fight him for his rebellion against him and his departure from obedience to him. When he reached Mayyāfāriqīn, Najā fled before him, so Sayf al-Dawlah took possession of his lands and the fortresses he had taken from Abū al-Ward. A group of Najā's companions sought safe-conduct from him, and he killed them. Najā's brother sought safe-conduct from him, and he treated him well and honored him. He sent to Najā, enticing him and intimidating him until he was brought before him, and he treated him well and restored him to his rank. Then Sayf al-Dawlah's ghulāms fell upon Najā in Sayf al-Dawlah's house in Mayyāfāriqīn in Rabīʿ al-Awwal of the year 354 AH, and they killed him before his eyes. Sayf al-Dawlah fainted, and Najā was taken out and thrown into the channel of water and filth. He remained there until the next day, then he was taken out and buried.
