Genealogy of Our Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and Some Accounts of His Forefathers and Ancestors
Translation
✧ b. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib: a form derived from "al-ṭalab" (seeking). He was given the kunyah Abū al-Ḥārith and Abū al-Baṭḥāʾ, and his name was Shaybah al-Ḥamd. Al-Suhaylī said: This is the correct view. It was also said: ʿĀmir. Abū ʿUmar, may God Almighty have mercy on him, said: It is not sound. There was disagreement as to why he was named Shaybah. It was said: He was born with a gray hair on his head, which was visible in his forelock. It was also said: Because his father had enjoined that upon his mother. He was given the title ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib because his father Hāshim came to Madinah as a merchant and stayed with ʿAmr b. Zayd b. Labīd b. Khidāsh b. ʿĀmir b. Ghanm b. ʿAdī al-Najjār. Muṣʿab mentioned this lineage. Al-Zuhrī said: ʿAmr b. Zayd b. ʿAdī b. al-Najjār. Ibn Isḥāq, may God Almighty have mercy on him, said: Zayd b. ʿAmr b. Asad b. Ḥarām b. Khidāsh b. Jundab b. ʿAdī b. al-Najjār. He caught sight of his daughter Salmā bt. ʿAmr, and she pleased him, so he sought her hand from her father, who married her to him on the condition that she would not give birth to a child except among her own people. Hāshim departed without consummating the marriage with her until he returned, then he consummated it with her among her people and resided with her for some years. Then he set out with her to Makkah, and when she became heavy with child, he took her out and placed her with her father and went on to Syria, where he died at Gaza on that journey. She gave birth to ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib, who remained in Madinah for seven or eight years. Then a man from the people of Tihāmah, from the Banū al-Ḥārith b. ʿAbd Manāf, passed through Madinah and found boys shooting arrows, and among them was a boy who, when he hit, would say: "I am the son of Hāshim, I am the son of the lord of al-Baṭḥāʾ." The man said to him: "From whom are you, boy?" He said: "I am Shaybah b. Hāshim b. ʿAbd Manāf." The man went away until he reached Makkah, where he found al-Muṭṭalib b. ʿAbd Manāf sitting in al-Ḥijr. He said to him: "Arise, Abū al-Ḥārith." He rose to meet him, and the man said: "Know that I have just come from Yathrib, where I found boys shooting arrows." He told him what he had seen of ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib. He said: "He is the most elegant boy I have ever seen, and it is not fitting that the like of him be left." Al-Muṭṭalib said: "By God, I neglected him! By God, I will not return to my family and wealth until I go to him." Al-Ḥārith gave him his she-camel, and he rode it. Al-Muṭṭalib b. ʿAbd Manāf set out until he reached Madinah in the evening. Then he went out with his riding beast until he came to the Banū ʿAdī b. al-Najjār, where there were boys among those present in the assembly. When he saw his brother's son, he said: "Is this the son of Hāshim?" The people said: "Yes." The people recognized al-Muṭṭalib and said: "Yes, this is your brother's son. If you intend to take him, do it now, before his mother learns; for if she learns, we will come between you and him." He made his riding beast kneel, then called him and said: "O son of my brother, I am your uncle, and I wish to take you to your people, so mount." By God, no sooner had he seated him on the rear of the saddle than al-Muṭṭalib sat on the saddle, then he urged his riding beast on and departed with him. When his mother learned that his uncle had taken him away, she clung to calling out in her grief for her son and said: We were guardians of his little and his much, until when he stood at his full height, they snatched him from his mother by stealth, And the right of the paternal uncle overcame the maternal uncles. And it was said that he took him with his mother's permission. When al-Muṭṭalib entered Makkah, he entered in the forenoon with the boy riding behind him, while the people were in their markets and gatherings. They rose to welcome him and said: "Who is this with you?" He would say: "This is my slave; I bought him in Yathrib." Then he went out with him until he came to al-Ḥazwarah, where he bought him a fine suit, and then he brought him in to his wife Khadījah bt. Saʿīd b. Saʿd b. Sahm. In the evening, he dressed him in the fine suit and seated him in the assembly of the Banū ʿAbd Manāf, and told them his story. After that, he would go out in that fine suit and walk around the streets of Makkah, and he was the most handsome of people in face, so they would say: "This is ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib," because of al-Muṭṭalib's saying: "This is my slave." Thus his name became fixed as ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib, and Shaybah was abandoned. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib used to visit his maternal uncles frequently and treat them kindly. Ḥummah: with an unpointed ḥāʾ, it may be vocalized with ḍammah or fatḥah, meaning a little. Rummah: with a rāʾ, it may be vocalized with fatḥah or ḍammah, meaning a great deal. Al-Balādhurī narrated from Muḥammad b. al-Sāʾib and others that they said: ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib was one of the forbearing and wise men of Quraysh. His drinking companion was Ḥarb b. Umayyah b. ʿAbd Shams b. ʿAbd Manāf. In the protection of ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib there was a Jew called Adhīnah, and the Jew used to trade in the markets of Tihāmah with his wealth. That enraged Ḥarb, so he incited the youths of Quraysh against him and said: "This foreigner cuts across to you and roams through your lands with abundant, plentiful wealth, without protection or horses. By God, if you were to kill him and take his wealth, you would fear no consequence, and no one would confront you seeking his blood." ʿĀmir b. ʿAbd Manāf b. ʿAbd al-Dār b. Quṣayy and Ṣakhr b. ʿAmr b. Kaʿb b. Saʿd b. Taym b. Murrah attacked him and killed him. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib did not know his killer, and he kept investigating his affair until he learned its news. He came to Ḥarb b. Umayyah and reproached him for his deed and demanded the blood of his protégé. Ḥarb granted protection to his killers and did not hand them over, but hid them. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib pressed him for them, and they exchanged harsh words until contention and obstinacy drove them to a contest of honor (munāfarah). They appointed as arbiter between them the Negus, the ruler of Abyssinia, but he refused to intervene between them. So they appointed between them Nufayl b. ʿAbd al-ʿUzzā b. Rabāḥ b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Qurṭ b. Razāḥ b. ʿAdī b. Kaʿb b. Luʾayy, the ancestor of ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb. He said to Ḥarb: "O Abū ʿAmr, do you contend in honor with a man who is taller than you in stature, more handsome than you in appearance, greater than you in head, fewer than you in blame, more numerous than you in children, more generous than you in gifts, and longer than you in reach? I say this, and you are far from anger, of high repute among the Arabs, firm in resolve, loved by your kinsmen, but you have contended with one who is bound to win." So ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib won the contest, and Ḥarb became angry. He spoke harshly to Nufayl and said: "It is one of the reversals of time that you have been made an arbiter." The Arabs used to refer their disputes to him. Nufayl said about that: The sons of Shaybah are people of glory; the high ones of Maʿadd have known, when the timid quiver, And their elder is the best elder; you cannot reach him. Truly, there is no folly or greed in him. O Ḥarb, your pursuits have not attained a weaned camel colt; it gives water to the pilgrims, and what can a weaned colt attain? Your fathers are one, and the branch between you: from it are the tangled ones, and from it the fresh, ripe fruit. So ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib abandoned the rights of Ḥarb's alliance, and he allied with ʿAbd Allāh b. Judʿān b. ʿAmr b. Kaʿb b. Saʿd b. Taym b. Murrah. He did not part from Ḥarb until he took from him a hundred she-camels and gave them to the son of the Jew's cousin, and he recovered his wealth except for a little that had been lost, which he paid from his own property. Al-Arqam b. Naḍlah b. Hāshim said about that: Before you, Hāshim destroyed Umayyah, and ʿAmr led him to the worst watering place. O Ḥarb, you have fought one who is not remiss; one who climbs to the goals, a clamberer of highlands.
