Translation
✧ Mention of Sayf al-Dawlah's raid on the lands of the Byzantines In this year, Sayf al-Dawlah raided the lands of the Byzantines with a large gathering, and he wrought many effects in them, and he burned and conquered several fortresses, and he took much in the way of captives, spoils, and prisoners, and he reached Kharshana. Then the Byzantines seized the mountain passes against him, and when he wanted to return, those with him from the people of Tarsus said to him: 'The Byzantines have taken control of the pass behind you, so you will not be able to return by it. The right course is that you return with us.' But he did not accept from them, being impressed with his own opinion, loving to act independently and not consult anyone, lest it be said that he was guided by another's opinion. He returned by the pass through which he had entered, and the Byzantines overcame him and recovered the spoils that were with him, and took his baggage, and put the sword to his companions, killing and capturing them. He himself escaped with three hundred men after great effort and hardship. This is from the bad judgment of one who is ignorant of the opinions of intelligent people, and God knows best what is correct.
