Translation

✧ Mention of the notables who died in this year 2546 - Al-Ḥasan b. Aḥmad Abū ʿAlī al-Kātib al-Miṣrī. He accompanied Abū ʿAlī al-Rūdhbārī and others, and Abū ʿUthmān al-Maghribī used to magnify his affair and say: Abū ʿAlī al-Kātib is one of the wayfarers. Abū ʿAlī said: The fragrances of the breeze of love emanate from the lovers even if they conceal them, and their signs appear upon them even if they hide them, and they are evident upon them even if they veil them. [And he recited]: When people's souls secretly mention Him, I discern it in them though they do not speak — their breaths become fragrant with it and divulge it; can the secret of musk deposited in the wind be concealed? 2547 - ʿAlī b. Muḥammad b. Muḥammad b. ʿUqbah b. Hammām, Abū al-Ḥasan al-Shaybānī al-Kūfī. He came to Baghdad and narrated there from a group, and al-Dāraquṭnī narrated from him. He was trustworthy, reliable, and his testimony was accepted by the judges. He continued to serve as a witness for seventy-three years, and he was a master of Qur'anic recitation and jurisprudence. He said: Abū al-Ḥasan ʿAlī b. Muḥammad b. Muḥammad b. ʿUqbah al-Shaybānī: The chief judge Abū al-Ḥasan Muḥammad b. Ṣāliḥ al-Hāshimī entered upon him and said to him: I was the intermediary for your father until I married him to your mother, and I attended the marriage contract, the wedding, the birth, the handing over to school, and I assumed the judgeship in Kufa. I testified before your caliph, and I called the adhan in my mosque for over seventy years, and my grandfather called the adhan for over seventy years, and it is the mosque of Ḥamzah b. Ḥabīb al-Zayyāt. Al-Shaybānī died in Ramaḍān of this year. 2548 - Muḥammad b. ʿAlī b. Ḥammād, Abū al-ʿAbbās al-Karkhī al-Adīb. He was a learned, ascetic, [and pious] man. He heard from ʿAbdān and his contemporaries. He used to complete the Qur'an every day and to fast continually. He died in Dhū al-Ḥijjah of this year. 2549 - Abū al-Khayr al-Tīnātī. His name is not known. His origin was from the Maghrib, and he lived in a village of the villages of Antioch called Tīnāt. He was called al-Aqṭaʿ (the one with the severed hand) because his hand had been cut off. That was because he made a covenant with God Almighty and then broke it. Thieves were seized from the desert, and he was seized with them, so his hand was cut off. He had accompanied Abū ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Jallāʾ and other shaykhs. From Muḥammad b. al-Faḍl: I left Antioch and entered Tīnāt, and I entered upon Abū al-Khayr al-Aqṭaʿ unawares, without permission. There he was, feeding himself from a basket with his hands. I was astonished, and he looked at me and said: O enemy of himself, what made you do this? I said: The surge of passion because of my longing for you. He laughed, then said to me: Sit. Do not return to anything like this after today, and conceal my state during my lifetime.
