Translation
✧ Mention of Abū ʿAlī's march to al-Rayy When the affair between Washmakīr and Rukn al-Dawlah was as we have mentioned, Washmakīr wrote to the amīr Nūḥ seeking his aid. Nūḥ wrote to Abū ʿAlī b. Muḥtāj, ordering him to march with the armies of Khurāsān to al-Rayy and fight Rukn al-Dawlah. Abū ʿAlī marched with many armies, and Washmakīr joined him, and they advanced to al-Rayy in Rabīʿ al-Awwal of this year. The news reached Rukn al-Dawlah, and he knew he had no strength against those who sought him. He decided to protect his land and fight his enemy from a single direction. He fought the Khurāsānians at Ṭabarak, and Abū ʿAlī besieged him for several months, fighting him, but could not prevail over him. The mounts of the Khurāsānians perished, winter came upon them, and they grew weary; they could not endure. Abū ʿAlī was compelled to make peace, and they exchanged messages about that. The envoy was Abū Jaʿfar al-Khāzin, the author of the book Zīj al-Ṣafāʾiḥ, who was knowledgeable in the mathematical sciences. The one who advised this was Muḥammad b. ʿAbd al-Razzāq, previously mentioned. They made peace, and it was settled that Rukn al-Dawlah would pay two hundred thousand dinars each year, and Abū ʿAlī returned to Khurāsān. Washmakīr wrote to the amīr Nūḥ informing him of the situation, mentioning that Abū ʿAlī had not been sincere in the war and had colluded with Rukn al-Dawlah. Nūḥ became angry with Abū ʿAlī. As for Rukn al-Dawlah, when Abū ʿAlī withdrew from him, he marched against Washmakīr, and Washmakīr fled before him to Asfarāyīn, and Rukn al-Dawlah took control of Ṭabaristān.
