Translation
✧ Then the year 339 AH began Mention of the death of al-Ṣaymarī and the vizierate of al-Muhallabī In this year, Abū Jaʿfar Muḥammad b. Aḥmad al-Ṣaymarī, the vizier of Muʿizz al-Dawlah for the affairs of al-Jāmida, died. He had returned to it from Fārs, and he was laying siege to ʿImrān b. Shāhīn when a severe fever seized him, and he died from it. Muʿizz al-Dawlah appointed Abū Muḥammad al-Ḥasan b. Muḥammad al-Muhallabī as vizier in Jumādā al-Ūlā. He had been acting as al-Ṣaymarī's deputy in the presence of Muʿizz al-Dawlah, and thus knew the affairs of the state and the dīwāns. Muʿizz al-Dawlah tested him, and saw in him what he sought of trustworthiness, competence, knowledge of the interests of the state, and good conduct, so he appointed him as vizier and empowered him in his vizierate. He conducted himself well and removed many acts of oppression, especially in al-Baṣrah, for the Barīdīs had perpetrated many acts of oppression there, which he removed. He drew near the people of knowledge and letters, and was kind to them. He traveled about the lands to investigate the acts of oppression within them and to recover funds, and his impact was good, may God Almighty have mercy on him.
