✧ Mention of the death of ʿImād al-Dawlah b. Buwayh In this year, ʿImād al-Dawlah Abū al-Ḥasan ʿAlī b. Buwayh died in the city of Shīrāz in Jumādā al-Ākhirah. His fatal illness was an ulcer in his kidney that was prolonged for him, and illnesses and diseases followed one another upon him. When he felt death approaching, he sent to his brother Rukn al-Dawlah requesting that he send his son ʿAḍud al-Dawlah Fannākhusraw to make him his heir apparent and the inheritor of his kingdom in Fārs, because ʿImād al-Dawlah had no male child. Rukn al-Dawlah sent his son ʿAḍud al-Dawlah, and he arrived during his uncle's lifetime a year before his death, traveling in the company of trusted followers of Rukn al-Dawlah. ʿImād al-Dawlah went out to meet him with his entire army, seated him in his residence upon the throne, and stood before him. He ordered the people to greet ʿAḍud al-Dawlah and submit to him, and it was a momentous, witnessed day. Among the commanders of ʿImād al-Dawlah were a group of prominent men whom he feared and knew to seek leadership. They considered themselves greater than him in standing and lineage and more entitled to precedence, and he dealt with them diplomatically. When he placed his brother's son in power, he feared them on his behalf, so he eliminated them by imprisonment. Among them was a great commander called Shayranjīn, whom he arrested. His companions and commanders interceded for him, and he said to them: "I will tell you a story about him; if you think I should release him, I will." He told them that he had been in Khurāsān in the service of Naṣr b. Aḥmad, and "we were a small band of Daylamites, and this man was with us. One day Naṣr sat while in his service were more than ten thousand of his own mamluks and his father's mamluks, besides the rest of the army. I saw this Shayranjīn draw a knife he had and wrap it in his cloak. I said: 'What is this?' He said: 'I want to kill this boy'—meaning Naṣr—'and I do not care about being killed after him, for I am too proud to stand in his service.' (Naṣr b. Aḥmad was then twenty years old and had grown a beard. I knew that) if he did that, he would not be killed alone; rather, we would all be killed. So I took him by the hand and said: 'I have a matter to discuss with you.' I went with him aside, gathered the Daylamites, and told them his story. They took the knife from him. So do you want me, after you have heard what he said about Naṣr, to let him stand before this boy," meaning his nephew? So they desisted, and he remained imprisoned until he died in his prison. ʿImād al-Dawlah died, and ʿAḍud al-Dawlah remained in Fārs, and his followers disagreed among themselves. Muʿizz al-Dawlah wrote to his vizier al-Ṣaymarī ordering him to go to Shīrāz and to abandon fighting ʿImrān b. Shāhīn. So he went to Fārs, and Rukn al-Dawlah also arrived, and they agreed to stabilize the position of ʿAḍud al-Dawlah. Rukn al-Dawlah had left ʿAlī b. Kāmah as his deputy in Rayy, and he was one of his leading followers. When Rukn al-Dawlah reached Shīrāz, he began by visiting the grave of his brother in Iṣṭakhr, walking barefoot and bareheaded with the armies in the same condition. He remained at the grave for three days until the great commanders asked him to return to the city, so he returned and stayed nine months. He sent to his brother Muʿizz al-Dawlah a great amount of money, weapons, and other things. During his lifetime, ʿImād al-Dawlah was the Amīr al-Umarāʾ. When he died, his brother Rukn al-Dawlah became Amīr al-Umarāʾ. Muʿizz al-Dawlah was the one in control of Iraq and the caliphate, acting as deputy for both of them. ʿImād al-Dawlah was generous, forbearing, intelligent, and skilled in governance (of kingdom and subjects). Previous accounts of him demonstrate his intellect and political acumen.
