Tarikh (al-Tabari) 4033

Then the year 334 AH began

✧ Mention of the reconciliation of Abū ʿAlī with Nūḥ Then Abū ʿAlī stayed in al-Ṣaghāniyān, and it reached him that the Amīr Nūḥ had resolved to send an army against him. So Abū ʿAlī gathered the troops and went out to Balkh and stayed there. A messenger of the Amīr Nūḥ came to him concerning peace, and he agreed to it. But a group of those with him from Nūḥ's commanders who had defected to him refused, saying, "We would like you to return us to our homes, then you may make peace." So Abū ʿAlī went out toward Bukhārā. The Amīr Nūḥ came out against him with his armies, and he made al-Faḍl b. Muḥammad, the brother of Abū ʿAlī, commander of his army. They met at Jurjīk in Jumādā al-Ūlā of the year 336 AH, and they fought shortly before the afternoon prayer. Ismāʿīl b. al-Ḥasan the dāʿī sought safe-conduct from Nūḥ, and the army dispersed from Abū ʿAlī, so he was defeated and returned to al-Ṣaghāniyān. Then it reached him that the Amīr Nūḥ had ordered the armies to march against him from Bukhārā and Balkh and elsewhere, and that the lord of al-Khuttal had prepared to support Abū ʿAlī. So Abū ʿAlī marched with his army to Tirmidh, crossed the Jayḥūn, and went to Balkh, taking control of it and of Ṭakhāristān, and collected the taxes of that region. A large army marched from Bukhārā to al-Ṣaghāniyān, and they camped at Nasaf, with them al-Faḍl b. Muḥammad, the brother of Abū ʿAlī. A group of the army's commanders wrote to the Amīr Nūḥ that they suspected al-Faḍl of inclining toward his brother, so he ordered them to arrest him. They arrested him and sent him to Bukhārā. News of the army reached Abū ʿAlī while he was in Ṭakhāristān, so he returned to al-Ṣaghāniyān, and battles occurred between them. Abū ʿAlī tightened their fodder supplies, so they moved to another village two farsakhs from al-Ṣaghāniyān. Abū ʿAlī fought them in Rabīʿ al-Awwal of the year 337 [and three hundred] a fierce battle, and they defeated him. He marched to Shūmān, which is sixteen farsakhs from al-Ṣaghāniyān. Nūḥ's army entered al-Ṣaghāniyān and destroyed Abū ʿAlī's palaces and dwellings. They pursued Abū ʿAlī, but he returned against them, gathered his battalion, tightened the siege on Nūḥ's army, and seized the roads against them, so news from Bukhārā was cut off from them, and their news from Bukhārā was cut off for about twenty days. They sent to Abū ʿAlī seeking peace, and he agreed to it. They agreed to send his son Abū al-Muẓaffar ʿAbd Allāh as a hostage to the Amīr Nūḥ, and peace was established between them in Jumādā al-Ākhirah of the year 337 AH. He sent his son to Bukhārā. Nūḥ ordered that he be received, and he honored him and treated him kindly. He had entered wearing a turban, and Nūḥ bestowed upon him a qalansuwah and made him one of his boon companions, and the discord ended. It would have been appropriate to mention these events in the years in which they occurred, but we have presented them consecutively in this year so that their mention would not be scattered. This is what the Khurāsānī historians mentioned. The Iraqi historians have mentioned these events in a different arrangement, and the people of each land know best their own affairs. We will mention what the Iraqis said in summary. They said: When Abū ʿAlī marched toward al-Rayy with the armies of Khurāsān, Rukn al-Dawlah wrote to his brother ʿImād al-Dawlah seeking reinforcements. He sent to him ordering him to leave al-Rayy and come to him for a plan he had regarding that, and Rukn al-Dawlah did so. Abū ʿAlī entered al-Rayy. ʿImād al-Dawlah wrote to Nūḥ secretly offering him for al-Rayy each year an increase over what Abū ʿAlī had offered of one hundred thousand dinars, and he would pay a year's guarantee in advance, and he offered his own assistance against Abū ʿAlī until he could seize him (and he warned him about him). Nūḥ consulted his companions, who envied and opposed Abū ʿAlī, and they advised him to accept. So Nūḥ sent to Ibn Buwayh someone to settle the arrangement and collect the money. He honored the messenger and gave him abundant wealth. He sent to Abū ʿAlī informing him of the news of this message, and that he was maintaining his pact and friendship, and he warned him of the treachery of the Amīr Nūḥ. So Abū ʿAlī sent his messenger to Ibrāhīm, who was in al-Mawṣil, summoning him so that he could make him king of the lands. Ibrāhīm marched, and Abū ʿAlī met him at Hamadhān, and they went to Khurāsān. ʿImād al-Dawlah wrote to his brother Rukn al-Dawlah ordering him to hasten to al-Rayy, and he returned to it. Khurāsān fell into turmoil, and ʿImād al-Dawlah sent back Nūḥ's messenger without the money, saying, "I fear that if I send the money, Abū ʿAlī will seize it." He sent to Nūḥ warning him of Abū ʿAlī and promising him assistance against him. He sent to Abū ʿAlī promising to send armies as reinforcements to him, and advising him to meet quickly. And Nūḥ marched and met Abū ʿAlī at Naysābūr, and Nūḥ was defeated and returned to Samarqand, and Abū ʿAlī took control of Bukhārā. And Abū ʿAlī became wary of Ibrāhīm and withdrew from him. Nūḥ gathered the armies and returned to Bukhārā, and fought his uncle Ibrāhīm. When the two ranks met, a group of Ibrāhīm's commanders defected back to Nūḥ, and the rest were defeated. Ibrāhīm was taken prisoner, and he and a group of his household were blinded—Nūḥ blinded them.
