✧ Mention of the war between Nāṣir al-Dawlah and Muʿizz al-Dawlah In this year, in Rajab, Muʿizz al-Dawlah dispatched an army including Mūsā Fayādah and Yanāl Kūshah to al-Mawṣil in his vanguard. When they camped at ʿUkbarā, Yanāl Kūshah fell upon Mūsā Fayādah, and his baggage was plundered. He and those with him went to Nāṣir al-Dawlah, who had already set out from al-Mawṣil toward Iraq. Nāṣir al-Dawlah reached Sāmarrāʾ in Shaʿbān, and war occurred between him and the forces of Muʿizz al-Dawlah at ʿUkbarā. In Ramaḍān, Muʿizz al-Dawlah marched with al-Muṭīʿ li-llāh to ʿUkbarā. When he departed from Baghdād, Ibn Shīrzād joined Nāṣir al-Dawlah and returned to Baghdād with an army for Nāṣir al-Dawlah. They took control of it, and Ibn Shīrzād administered affairs there as deputy for Nāṣir al-Dawlah, while Nāṣir al-Dawlah fought Muʿizz al-Dawlah. On the tenth of Ramaḍān, Nāṣir al-Dawlah marched from Sāmarrāʾ to Baghdād and stayed there. When Muʿizz al-Dawlah heard the news, he marched to Takrīt and plundered it, because it belonged to Nāṣir al-Dawlah. The caliph returned with him to Baghdād, and they camped on the western side, while Nāṣir al-Dawlah camped on the eastern side, and no sermon was given for al-Muṭīʿ in Baghdād. Then war occurred between them in Baghdād, and the Bedouin of Nāṣir al-Dawlah spread through the western side, preventing the forces of Muʿizz al-Dawlah from obtaining provisions and fodder. Prices soared for the Daylamites, until bread among them reached every raṭl for a dirham and a quarter, while the price with Nāṣir al-Dawlah was cheap, as provisions came to him on the Tigris from al-Mawṣil, so bread with him was every five raṭls for a dirham. Nāṣir al-Dawlah forbade transactions with the dinars bearing the name of al-Muṭīʿ, and he struck dinars and dirhams on the mint of the year 331 with the name of al-Muttaqī li-llāh upon them. Ibn Shīrzād sought aid from the ʿayyārūn and the common people for the war against Muʿizz al-Dawlah, and he would ride on the water with them and fight the Daylamites. One night, Nāṣir al-Dawlah crossed with a thousand horsemen to raid Muʿizz al-Dawlah, but Asfahdūst met them and routed them, and he was among the bravest of men. The situation became dire for the Daylamites until Muʿizz al-Dawlah resolved to return to al-Ahwāz, saying, "We shall employ a stratagem against them this time; if it succeeds, good, otherwise we shall return." He arranged the boats he had with him at the area of al-Thammārīn and ordered his vizier Abū Jaʿfar al-Ṣaymarī and Asfahdūst to cross. Then he took the rest of the army with him, showing that he would cross at Quṭrabbul, and he marched at night with torches along the bank of the Tigris. Most of Nāṣir al-Dawlah's army moved opposite him to prevent him from crossing. Thus al-Ṣaymarī and Asfahdūst were able to cross, and they crossed and were followed by their companions. When Muʿizz al-Dawlah learned of his companions' crossing, he returned to his position. They realized his stratagem. Yanāl Kūshah met them with a group of Nāṣir al-Dawlah's companions, and they routed him. The army of Nāṣir al-Dawlah fell into disorder, and the Daylamites seized the eastern side. The caliph was returned to his palace in Muḥarram of the year 335. The Daylamites took booty and plundered people's properties in Baghdād, and the amount they took as booty and plunder from the properties of prominent people alone, apart from others, was ten million dinars. Muʿizz al-Dawlah ordered them to sheathe the sword and desist from plunder, and he granted safety to the people, but they did not desist. He ordered his vizier Abū Jaʿfar al-Ṣaymarī, who rode out, killed and crucified a group, and went around himself, but they refrained. Muʿizz al-Dawlah settled in Baghdād, while Nāṣir al-Dawlah stayed at ʿUkbarā and sent for peace without consulting the Tūzūnī Turks. They resolved to kill him, so he departed from them in haste toward al-Mawṣil. Then peace was concluded between him and Muʿizz al-Dawlah in Muḥarram of the year 335.
