✧ Account of Abu Yazid's siege of Susa and his rout from it When Abu Yazid saw what had befallen his army in the way of defeat, he pressed on with his affair, gathered the troops, and marched to Susa on the sixth of Jumada al-Akhirah of the year. In it was a large army loyal to al-Qa'im, and he besieged it with a severe siege. He fought against it every day, sometimes gaining the upper hand and sometimes losing it, and he employed siege engines and mangonels. Many of the people of Susa were killed, and he besieged it until al-Qa'im delegated the succession to his son Isma'il al-Mansur in Ramadan, and al-Qa'im died and his son al-Mansur took possession of the kingdom, as we shall relate. He concealed the death of his father out of fear of Abu Yazid, who was close by and besieging the city of Susa. When he assumed power, he built ships and filled them with men, and dispatched them to Susa under the command of Rashiq the scribe and Ya'qub b. Ishaq, instructing them not to fight until he ordered them. Then he set out the next day intending Susa without his companions knowing it. When he had covered half the way, they realized it and implored him to return and not risk his own person. So he returned and sent word to Rashiq and Ya'qub to press on with the fighting. They reached Susa, where Abu Yazid had prepared firewood for burning the wall and had built a great siege tower. Al-Mansur's fleet reached Susa and joined forces with those inside the city, and they went out to fight Abu Yazid. He mounted in person, and they fought fiercely. Some of al-Mansur's men were routed and entered the city, but Rashiq set fire to the firewood that Abu Yazid had gathered and to the siege tower. The sky darkened with smoke and the fire blazed up. When Abu Yazid and his companions saw that, they were afraid and thought that their comrades in that quarter had perished. That is why al-Mansur's men were able to set fire to the firewood while neither side could see the other. Abu Yazid and his companions fled, and al-Mansur's troops came out and put the sword to those Berbers who had lagged behind, and burned his tents. Abu Yazid fled on until he entered al-Qayrawan the same day, while the Berbers fled in all directions. Those who escaped the sword died of hunger and thirst. When Abu Yazid reached al-Qayrawan, he wanted to enter the city, but its inhabitants prevented him. They returned to the house of his governor and besieged him there, intending to break down the door. He scattered dinars over the people's heads, and they were distracted from him, so he went out to Abu Yazid. Abu Yazid took his wife Umm Ayyub, and his companions followed him with their families. They journeyed to the district of Sabiba, which is two days' journey from al-Qayrawan, and encamped there.
