Ibrāhīm b. Ḥammād b. Isḥāq b. Ismāʿīl b. Ḥammād b. Zayd, Abū ʿUthmān: He held the judgeship of Egypt and came to it, then was dismissed and resided there until he died in Ramaḍān of this year. He transmitted ḥadīth from Ismāʿīl b. Isḥāq al-Qāḍī and many others. He was reliable, generous, and modest. 2430 - Aḥmad b. Ibrāhīm b. Tūmard al-Faqīh: He studied jurisprudence under Abū al-ʿAbbās b. Surayj. He came out of the bathhouse and a wall fell on him, and he died in this year. 2431 - Isḥāq b. Ibrāhīm b. Mūsā, Abū al-Qāsim al-Ghazzāl al-Faqīh: He was born in the year 240. He transmitted ḥadīth from al-Ḥasan b. ʿArafah and Muḥammad b. Saʿd al-ʿAwfī. Yūsuf al-Waqqāṣ narrated from him. He died in Egypt in this year. 2432 - Bujkum al-Turkī: He was commander of the army and was titled Amīr al-Umarāʾ before the rule of the Būyids. He was intelligent and understood Arabic but did not speak it, saying: "I fear making a mistake, and a mistake by a leader is ugly." He used to say: "Even if I am not proficient in knowledge and literature, I love that there be no man of letters, scholar, or master of a craft on earth except at my side and under my patronage." He had settled in Wāsiṭ and agreed with al-Rāḍī bi-llāh that he would deliver to his treasury [from its revenues] eight hundred thousand dinars every year after deducting the expenses of five thousand horsemen stationed there. He had shown justice and used to say: "I have been informed that justice is more profitable for the ruler in this world and the next." He built a guesthouse for the poor and destitute in Wāsiṭ, and he began the construction of the hospital in Baghdad, which ʿAḍud al-Dawlah later renovated. His wealth was vast, and he used to bury it in his house and in the deserts. He would take men in chests, lock them inside, and take chests containing money, leading them himself to the desert. Then he would open them and they would help him bury the money, after which he would return them to the chests, so they did not know to which place he had carried them. He would say: "I do this only because I fear being separated from my house." Thus the buried treasures were lost at his death. After the death of al-Rāḍī, Bujkum sent to Sinān b. Thābit the physician, asking him to come down to him at Wāsiṭ. He went down to him and was honored. Bujkum said to him: "[I] wish to rely on you in managing my body, and in another matter dearer to me than the affair of my body: a moral matter, because of my trust in your intellect [and your religion]. The dominance of anger and rage has distressed me, and their excess in me, to the point that I commit what I later regret when they subside, of beating and killing. I ask you to examine for me what I do, and if you find a fault in me, do not be shy to tell me the truth about it and alert me to it, then guide me to its remedy." He replied: "I hear and obey. I will do that, but let the amir hear from me now [the summary of] the remedy for what he dislikes in himself, until I provide details at their proper times. Know, O amir, that you have become [with no hand above your hand] of any creature, and you possess [all] that you desire, able to do it whenever you wish. No creature can prevent you or come between you and what you desire at any time. And know that anger and rage produce in a person an intoxication far stronger than the intoxication of wine. Just as a person does in the time of intoxication from wine what he does not understand and does not remember when sober, and regrets it when it happens, and feels ashamed of it, likewise it happens to him in the time of [intoxication from] anger, but more severely. So when anger begins with you, resolve to postpone punishment until tomorrow, trusting that what you want to do at the moment will not escape you. For when you spend the night, the heat of your anger will subside. It has been said: 'A person's judgment is soundest when he has left the night behind and faces the day.' When you sober from your anger, reflect on the matter that angered you, putting first the command of God (mighty and majestic be He) and fear of Him, avoiding exposure to His wrath. Satisfy your rage with what does not make you sinful, for it has been said: 'He who sins has not satisfied his rage.' Remember God's power over you, for you need His mercy and His taking you by the hand in times of hardship. Just as you love to be forgiven, likewise others love that you pardon them. Remember what night the guilty one spent restless from fear of you, and what punishment he expects from you. Recognize the amount of joy he receives from the removal of terror, and the amount of reward you obtain thereby. Remember His saying, exalted be He: 'Do you not love that God should forgive you?' This will be hard for you only two or three times, then it becomes a habit and a character [and becomes easy]." Bujkum began to act according to what he told him, [and he built in Wāsiṭ at the time of famine a guesthouse, and in Baghdad a hospital, and he was kind to the subjects], but his term did not last long. ʿAbd al-Salām b. al-Ḥārith said: A man of the Sufis came to Bujkum and admonished him, speaking in Persian and Arabic until he made him weep bitterly. When he departed, Bujkum said to one of those present: "Carry a thousand dirhams with him." They were carried, and Bujkum turned to those before him and said: "I do not think he will accept them. This one is devoted to worship. What would he do with dirhams?" It was not long before the servant returned empty-handed. Bujkum said to him: "Did you give them to him?" He said: "Yes." Bujkum said: "We are all hunters, but the nets differ." One day Bujkum went out hunting and met a group of wealthy Kurds. He coveted their wealth and headed toward them with a small number of his servants, thinking little [of their affair]. They fled before him and scattered. One of their servants circled behind him and thrust him with a spear, not recognizing him, and killed him with seven nights remaining of Rajab of this year. His rule lasted two years, eight months, and nine days. Al-Muttaqī rode to his house, alighted there, and removed what was in it. He dug up its foundations and obtained from his wealth more than two million in gold and silver. The diggers were told: "Take the soil as your wage." They refused, so they were given two thousand dirhams. The soil was washed and yielded thirty-six thousand dirhams. It was said that he found over one million three hundred thousand dinars in gold [and silver]. From the various goods, slaves, jewels, clothing, mounts, vessels, slaves, footwear, animals, and weapons, a vast amount was sold, apart from what was looted and destroyed. Then a great amount of money appeared in [his house], besides the first money, buried; among it were sixteen flasks [of gold], each flask carried in a cart because of its weight. 2433 - Jaʿfar b. Aḥmad b. Muḥammad b. Yaḥyā b. ʿAbd al-Jabbār, Abū Muḥammad al-Qāriʾ al-Muʾadhdhin, of Marwazī origin: He heard from a group, and Ibn al-Muẓaffar and al-Dāraquṭnī narrated from him, who said: "He is reliable." He died in Rabīʿ of this year. 2434 - Al-Ḥasan b. ʿAlī b. Khalaf, Abū Muḥammad al-Barbahārī: He combined knowledge and asceticism, accompanied al-Marwadhī and Sahl al-Tustarī, and abstained from his father's inheritance because of a matter he disliked, which was seventy thousand dirhams. He was severe against the people of innovation, and they kept weighing on the ruler's heart against him. He used to live at Bāb Muḥawwal, then moved to the eastern side and hid with the sister of Tūzūn. He remained about a month, then suffered a hemorrhage and died. The woman said to her servant: "Find someone to wash him," and she locked the doors so that no one would know. The washer came and washed him, then stood to pray over him alone. She looked and saw the house filled with men in white and green garments. She called the servant and said: "What have you done?" He said: "My lady, did you see what I saw?" She said: "Yes." He said: "Here are the keys to the door, and it is locked." She said: "Bury him in my house, and when I die, bury me near him." They buried him in her house. She died after him and was buried there. The place is near the royal residence in al-Mukharrim. He was ninety-six years old. [The compiler said:] Our shaykh Abū al-Ḥasan Ibn al-Zāghūnī said: "His grave was opened after some years, and he was sound, not decayed, and fragrances of perfume emanated from his grave until they filled the City of Peace." 2435 - Al-Ḥasan b. Ṭāhir say, when asked: "Why does a person endure from his teacher what he does not endure from his parents?" He replied: "Because his parents are the cause of his transient life, and his teacher is the cause of his everlasting life." 2439 - [ʿAbd Allāh b. Muḥammad b. Isḥāq b.
