Then the Year 327 AH Began
وَكَانَ الْحَجُّ مِنْ جِهَةِ دَرْبِ الْعِرَاقِ قَدْ تَعَطَّلَ مِنْ سَنَةِ سَبْعَ عَشْرَةَ وَثَلَاثِمِائَةٍ إِلَى هَذِهِ السَّنَةِ، فَشَفَعَ الشَّرِيفُ أَبُو عَلِيٍّ عُمَرُ بْنُ يَحْيَى الْعَلَوِيُّ عِنْدَ الْقَرَامِطَةِ، وَكَانُوا يُحِبُّونَهُ لِشَجَاعَتِهِ وَكَرَمِهِ، فِي أَنْ يُمَكِّنُوا الْحَجِيجَ مِنَ الْحَجِّ، وَأَنْ يَكُونَ لَهُمْ عَلَى كُلِّ جَمَلٍ خَمْسَةُ دَنَانِيرَ، وَعَلَى الْمَحْمَلِ سَبْعَةُ دَنَانِيرَ، فَخَرَجَ النَّاسُ لِلْحَجِّ فِي هَذِهِ السَّنَةِ عَلَى هَذَا الشَّرْطِ، فَكَانَ مِنْ جُمْلَةِ مَنْ خَرَجَ الشَّيْخُ أَبُو عَلِيِّ بْنُ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ أَحَدُ أَئِمَّةِ الشَّافِعِيَّةِ، فَلَمَّا اجْتَازَ بِهِمْ طَالَبُوهُ بِالْخُفَارَةِ، فَثَنَى رَأْسَ رَاحِلَتِهِ وَرَجَعَ، وَقَالَ: مَا رَجَعْتُ شُحًّا، وَلَكِنْ سَقَطَ عَنِّي وُجُوبُ الْحَجِّ بِطَلَبِ هَذِهِ الْخُفَارَةِ.
Translation
✧ The pilgrimage from the direction of the road of Iraq had been suspended from the year 317 to this year, so the Sharif Abu Ali Umar b. Yahya al-Alawi interceded with the Qaramita—and they loved him for his courage and generosity—that they might enable the pilgrims to perform the Hajj, and that they should have five dinars for every camel, and seven dinars for the litter. So the people went out for the Hajj in this year on this condition. Among those who went out was the Shaykh Abu Ali b. Abi Hurayra, one of the imams of the Shafiʿis. When he passed by them, they demanded the escort tax of him, so he turned the head of his mount and returned, and said: 'I did not return out of miserliness, but the obligation of the Hajj fell from me because of the demand of this escort tax.'
