قَالَ الْبُخَارِيُّ بسنده عَنْ عَائِشَةَ أَنَّ قُرَيْشًا أَهَمَّهُمْ شَأْنُ الْمَرْأَةِ الْمَخْزُومِيَّةِ الَّتِي سَرَقَتْ فَقَالُوا: مَنْ يُكَلِّمُ فِيهَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَالُوا: وَمَنْ يَجْتَرِئُ عَلَيْهِ إِلَّا أُسَامَةُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ حِبُّ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ ؟ فَكَلَّمَهُ أُسَامَةُ فَقَالَ: أَتَشْفَعُ فِي حَدٍّ مِنْ حُدُودِ اللَّهِ، ثُمَّ قَامَ فَخَطَبَ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: إِنَّمَا أَهْلَكَ الَّذِينَ مِنْ قَبْلِكُمْ أَنَّهُمْ كَانُوا إِذَا سَرَقَ فِيهِمُ الشَّرِيفُ تَرَكُوهُ، وَإِذَا سَرَقَ فِيهِمُ الضَّعِيفُ أَقَامُوا عَلَيْهِ الْحَدَّ، وَايْمُ اللَّهِ لَوْ أَنَّ فَاطِمَةَ بِنْتَ مُحَمَّدٍ سَرَقَتْ لَقَطَعْتُ يَدَهَا وَأَخْرَجَهُ بَقِيَّةُ الْجَمَاعَةِ مِنْ طُرُقٍ عَنِ اللَّيْثِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ بِهِ.
Translation
✧ Al-Bukhārī said with his chain of transmission, on the authority of ʿĀʾishah, that Quraysh were concerned about the affair of the Makhzūmī woman who had stolen. They said: “Who will speak to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about her?” They said: “And who would dare to do so except Usāmah b. Zayd, the beloved of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?” So Usāmah spoke to him, and he said: “Do you intercede regarding one of the limits set by Allah?” Then he stood and delivered a sermon, then said: “Indeed, those before you were destroyed only because, when a noble person among them stole, they left him alone, and when a weak person among them stole, they carried out the prescribed punishment on him. By Allah, if Fāṭimah bt. Muḥammad were to steal, I would cut off her hand.” The rest of the group transmitted it through various routes from al-Layth b. Saʿd, from him.
