✧ Mention of the Caliphate of al-Rāḍī bi-llāh He was Abū al-ʿAbbās Aḥmad b. al-Muqtadir bi-llāh. When al-Qāhir was seized, they asked the servants about the place in which Abū al-ʿAbbās b. al-Muqtadir was, and they directed them to him. He and his mother were imprisoned, so they went to him, opened the door, entered, and saluted him as caliph. They brought him out and seated him on al-Qāhir's throne on Wednesday, the sixth of Jumādā al-Ūlā. They titled him al-Rāḍī bi-llāh, and the commanders and the people swore allegiance to him. He ordered that ʿAlī b. ʿĪsā and his brother ʿAbd al-Raḥmān be brought, and he acted according to their advice in what he did. He consulted them and wanted ʿAlī b. ʿĪsā to be vizier, but he declined because of his advanced age, incapacity, and weakness, and he recommended Ibn Muqlah. Then Sīmā said to al-Rāḍī: "The time cannot tolerate the character of ʿAlī, and Ibn Muqlah is more suitable for the time." So he wrote him a safe-conduct, brought him, and appointed him vizier. When he became vizier, he treated well all those who had mistreated him, and his conduct was good. He said: "I made a covenant with God during my concealment to do so," and he fulfilled it. He brought the witnesses and judges and sent them to al-Qāhir so that they might testify to his deposition, but he would not, so he was blinded that same night, and he remained blind, unable to see. Ibn Muqlah sent to al-Khuṣaybī and ʿĪsā the physician a safe-conduct, and they came out, and he treated them well. He appointed al-Khuṣaybī and gave him office. Al-Rāḍī bi-llāh appointed Badr al-Kharshanī over the police, and he appointed Ibn Muqlah's Abū al-Faḍl b. Jaʿfar b. al-Furāt, in Jumādā al-Ūlā, as his deputy over all the agents in al-Mawṣil, Qardā, Bāzabdī, Māridīn, Ṭūr ʿAbdīn, Diyār al-Jazīrah, Diyār Bakr, the Euphrates route, the Jazīran and Syrian frontiers, the armies of Syria, and the districts of Egypt, to dismiss whom he saw fit and appoint whom he saw fit over the land tax, assistants, expenditures, the postal service, and other matters. He sent to Muḥammad b. Rāʾiq summoning him to appoint him to the chamberlainship. He had taken possession of al-Ahwāz and its districts and had driven Ibn Yāqūt away from them. Nothing remained in the hands of Ibn Yāqūt of that province except al-Sūs and Jundaysābūr, and he wanted to go to Iṣbahān as its governor, as we have mentioned. That was in the last days of al-Qāhir. When al-Rāḍī became caliph and summoned him, he traveled to Wāsiṭ and sent Muḥammad b. Yāqūt to request the chamberlainship. He was granted it, so he set out in the track of Ibn Rāʾiq. The news reached Ibn Rāʾiq, but he did not stop and traveled up from Wāsiṭ to Baghdādh, racing Ibn Yāqūt. When he reached al-Madāʾin, al-Rāḍī's decree met him, ordering him not to enter Baghdādh, and appointing him over the army and assistants at Wāsiṭ, in addition to what he already held of al-Baṣrah and elsewhere. So he returned downstream on the Tigris, and Ibn Yāqūt met him going upstream on it as well, and they greeted one another. Ibn Yāqūt went up to Baghdādh and assumed the chamberlainship, as we shall mention.
