Translation

✧ [The concealing of al-Qāhir's wealth, his begging from people, and his death] Al-Masʿūdī said: (Al-Qāhir took a great amount of wealth from Muʾnis and his companions. When he was deposed and blinded... he was demanded to give it back, but he denied it. He was tortured with various kinds of torture, but he did not confess to anything. Then al-Rāḍī billāh took him, brought him near and drew him close, and said to him: 'You see the soldiers demanding money, and I have nothing. What you have is of no benefit to you.' So he confessed to it, and said: 'Since you have done this... the money is buried in the garden.' He had created a garden containing various kinds of trees, brought to him from different lands, and decorated it and built a palace in it. Al-Rāḍī was infatuated with the garden and the palace. He said: 'In which place is the money in it?' He said: 'I am blind and cannot find the place. Dig up the garden and you will find it.' So al-Rāḍī dug up the garden and the foundations of the palace, and uprooted the trees, but found nothing. He said to him: 'Where is the money?' He said: 'Do I have any money?! My only regret was your sitting in the garden and enjoying its comfort, so I wanted to cause you grief over it.' Al-Rāḍī regretted and imprisoned him. He remained until the year 333. Then they released him and neglected him. One day he stood in the Jāmiʿ of al-Manṣūr between the rows wearing a white padded garment and said: 'Give charity to me, for I am the one you know.' That was in the days of al-Mustakfī to disgrace him. He was prevented from going out until he died in the year 339, in Jumādā al-Ūlā, at the age of fifty-three.) He had the following children: ʿAbd al-Ṣamad, Abū al-Qāsim, Abū al-Faḍl, and ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz.
