Muḥammad b. Hārūn, Abū Bakr al-Khallāl: He heard from al-Ḥasan b. ʿArafah, Saʿdān b. Naṣr, and others. He directed his attention to gathering the sciences of Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal, sought them out, traveled for their sake, compiled them, and collected from them what no one else had collected. Everyone who follows this school takes from his books. He died on Friday, before the prayer, two nights remaining of Rabīʿ al-Awwal of this year, and was buried beside al-Marwadhī [on the platform]. Aḥmad b. Ḥafṣ b. Yazīd, Abū Bakr al-Maʿāfirī: [He transmitted and] narrated from ʿĪsā b. Ḥammād and others, and he was virtuous. He died in Rabīʿ al-Awwal of this year. Aḥmad b. Muḥammad b. al-Ḥusayn, Abū Muḥammad al-Jarīrī: He heard from Sarī, and al-Junayd used to honor him. It was said to him at his death: To whom should we sit after you? He said: To Abū Muḥammad al-Jarīrī. From ʿAbdallāh al-Rāzī, who said: I heard al-Jarīrī say: For twenty years I have not stretched out my leg when sitting in seclusion, for good comportment with God is more befitting. ʿAbd al-Karīm said: I heard ʿAbdallāh b. Yūsuf al-Aṣbahānī say: I heard Abū al-Faḍl al-Ṣarrām say: I heard ʿAlī b. ʿAbdallāh say: Abū Muḥammad al-Jarīrī made iʿtikāf in Makkah in the year 292 AH, and he did not eat, did not sleep, did not lean against a wall, and did not stretch out his legs. Abū Bakr al-Kattānī said to him: O Abū Muḥammad, by what were you able to carry out your iʿtikāf? He said: God knew the sincerity of my inward, so He helped me with my outward. From Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Sulamī, who said: I heard Abū Saʿīd al-Rāzī say: Al-Jarīrī died in the year of the Battle of al-Habīr; the camels trampled him at the time of the battle. Al-Sulamī said: I heard Abū ʿAbdallāh al-Rāzī say: The Battle of al-Habīr was in the year 311 AH. Ibn al-Jawzī, may God have mercy on him, said: Al-Habīr is the name of a place where Abū Saʿīd al-Jannābī the Qarmaṭī confronted the pilgrims. He struck a group of them and they scattered, then he returned and confronted them in Muḥarram of the year 312 AH and inflicted upon them a horrible slaughter. Thus it is possible that al-Jarīrī perished in the first confrontation, though he perished on the road and remained in that state. From ʿAbd al-Karīm b. Hawāzin, who said: I heard Abū ʿAbdallāh b. Bākawayh al-Shīrāzī say: I heard Aḥmad b. ʿAṭāʾ al-Rūdhbārī say: Al-Jarīrī died in the year of al-Habīr. I mourned him after a year, and behold, he was sitting leaning back, his knees drawn up to his chest, pointing with his finger toward God Most High. Aḥmad b. Ḥamdān b. ʿAlī b. Sinān, Abū Jaʿfar al-Naysābūrī: He met Abū Ḥafṣ [and others] and was among the scrupulously pious. He transmitted ḥadīth with chains, and he had excellent words. He used to say: You hate the people of sin for one sin you suspect, but you do not hate yourself despite the sins you are certain of. He died in this year. Ibrāhīm b. al-Sarī b. Sahl, Abū Isḥāq al-Zajjāj: He was among the people of virtue and knowledge, along with sound belief, and he had excellent writings. From al-Zajjāj, who said: I used to turn glass, and I desired grammar, so I attached myself to al-Mubarrad to learn it. He would not teach for free [and would not teach] except for a fee commensurate with it. He said to me: What is your craft? I said: I turn glass, and my earning each day is a dirham and a half. I want you to be thorough in teaching me, and I will give you a dirham every day, and I stipulate to you that I will give it to you forever until death separates us, whether I become independent of learning or still need it. He said: So I attached myself to him, and I used to serve him in his affairs, and along with that I gave him the dirham. He sincerely advised me in knowledge until I became independent. Then a letter came to him from some of the Banū Mādamah of al-Ṣarāh seeking a grammar teacher for their sons. I said to him: Name me to them. He named me, so I went out and taught them, and I sent him thirty dirhams every month, and after that I looked after him with what I could. This went on for a while. Then ʿUbaydallāh b. Sulaymān asked him for a tutor for his son al-Qāsim. He said: I know of no one for you except a glassworker at al-Ṣarāh with the Banū Mādamah. He said: So ʿUbaydallāh wrote to them and asked them to release me. They brought me, and he entrusted al-Qāsim to me. That was the cause of my wealth. I used to give al-Mubarrad that dirham every day until he died, and I did not fail to look after him as much as I could. From Abū Isḥāq al-Zajjāj, who said: I used to tutor al-Qāsim b. ʿUbaydallāh, and I would say to him: If God brings you to the position of your father and you are appointed to the vizierate, what will you do for me? He would say: Whatever you desire. I would say: [That] you give me twenty thousand dinars, and that was the utmost of my wish. Only a few years passed until al-Qāsim was appointed to the vizierate while I was still attached to him, and I had become his boon companion. My soul urged me to remind him of the promise, but I was in awe of him. On the third day of his vizierate, he said to me: O Abū Isḥāq, did I not see that you reminded me of the vow? I said: I relied on the vizier's judgment, may God support him, and that he has no need for me to remind him of a vow upon him in the matter of a servant whose right is obligatory. He said to me: It is al-Muʿtaḍid bi-llāh, and were it not for him, it would not be too great for me to hand that to you at once, but I fear it would become a subject of talk with him about you, so allow me that you take it in installments. I said: I will. He said: Sit for the people, take their petitions in great matters, and charge fees for them, and do not refrain from asking me anything you address, whether sound or absurd, until the money of the vow accrues to you. I did that, and every day I would present petitions to him and he would sign them. Sometimes he would say to me: How much was guaranteed to you for this? I would say: Such and such. He would say: You have been cheated; this is worth such and such, so ask for more. I would go back to the people and keep haggling with them, and they would increase me until I reached that limit he had set for me. He said: I presented something great to him, and twenty thousand dinars or more accrued to me in a short while. After months he said to me: O Abū Isḥāq, has the money of the vow accrued? I said: No, so he kept silent. I would present petitions, and every month or so he would ask me: Has the money accrued? I would say: No, out of fear that my earning would be cut off, until twice that amount had accrued to me. One day he asked me, and I was ashamed of the continuous lying, so I said: It has accrued to me by the blessing of the vizier. He said: By God, you have relieved me, for my heart was occupied until it accrued to you. He said: Then he took the inkwell and signed for me to his treasurer for three thousand dinars [as a gift]. I took it and refrained from presenting anything to him, and I did not know how to comport myself with him. The next day I came to him and sat as usual, and he gestured to me: Bring what you have, requesting the petitions as was customary. I said: I have not taken a petition from anyone, because the vow has been fulfilled, and I did not know how to comport myself with the vizier. He said: Glory be to God! Do you think I would cut off from you something that has become a habit for you, that people have come to know, and by which you have gained a station among them and prestige, and coming and going to your door, while the reason for its cessation would not be known, and it would be thought that your standing with me has weakened or your rank has changed? Present to me as is your custom, and take without reckoning. So I kissed his hand, and the next morning I came early with petitions, and I presented to him every day until he died, and this state of mine had grown threefold. Ibn al-Jawzī, may God have mercy on him, said: I have seen many of the scholars of ḥadīth and knowledge read this story and marvel at it, admiring this act, heedless of the ugliness beneath it. That is because it is incumbent upon governors to convey the petitions of the wronged and the needy, so setting up someone who takes fees for this is ugly and forbidden. This is a great disgrace to al-Zajjāj, and it does not lift from him, because if he did not know what was hidden in what he related about himself, then this is ignorance of the ruling of the Law, and if he did know, then his relating it is the utmost ugliness. We seek refuge with God from lack of understanding. Abū al-Qāsim ʿAlī b. Ṭalḥah al-Naḥwī said: I heard Abū ʿAlī al-Fārisī say: I entered with our shaykh Abū Isḥāq al-Zajjāj upon al-Qāsim b. ʿUbaydallāh the vizier. A servant came to him and whispered something to him that made him rejoice, then he asked our shaykh Abū Isḥāq to stay until he returned. Then he rose, and it was not long before he returned with traces of gloom on his face. Our shaykh asked him about that because of the familiarity between them. He said: A slave girl of one of the singing women used to frequent us, and I asked her owner to sell her to me, but she refused. Then one of those who advised her suggested that she gift her to me, hoping that I would multiply her price. When she arrived, the servant informed me of that, so I rose rejoicing to deflower her, but I found that she had menstruated, and so what you see happened. Our shaykh took the inkwell from his hands and wrote: A knight advancing with his lance, skilled at thrusting in the dark, he sought to bloody his prey, so she warded him off with blood for blood. From Abū Muḥammad al-Warrāq, [who said:] A neighbor of ours said: I was on Shāriʿ al-Anbār as a boy on Nayrūz day when a rider passed by. Some boys rushed and splashed water on him, and he began to say while shaking his cloak from the water: When the water of the face diminishes, its modesty diminishes, and there is no good in a face when its water diminishes. When he had passed, it was said to us: That is Abū Isḥāq al-Zajjāj. Al-Ṭāhirī said: Shāriʿ al-Anbār is the street leading to al-Kabsh and al-Asad. From Muḥammad b. Aḥmad al-Mukharrimī: A quarrel occurred between him and al-Zajjāj and the one known as Musayyinah, and he was a man of knowledge. It continued, and Iblīs wove it and tightened it until al-Zajjāj went so far as to insult. Musayyinah wrote to him: Al-Zajjāj insisted only on insulting my honor to satisfy himself, so he made himself sinful and harmed himself. He swore truly that no free man would let his tongue loose in insulting a free woman. Had I turned back, he would have fled from me, but fate forced me back. He has become one whom God has protected from my evil, for a day when God will not protect him from its evil. When this news reached al-Zajjāj, he went to him on foot and apologized, asking for reconciliation. Al-Zajjāj died on Friday, eleven nights having passed of Jumādā al-Ākhirah of this year. Badr Abū al-Najm, mawlā of al-Muʿtaḍid bi-llāh, also called Badr the Great, and called [Badr] al-Ḥammāmī: He had taken charge of affairs with Ibn Ṭūlūn in Egypt. When he was killed, he came to Baghdad, and the sultan appointed him over the military affairs and raiding forces in Fārs and Kirmān. He went out to his post and narrated from Hilāl b. al-ʿAlāʾ and others. He stayed there, and his days were long until he died in Shīrāz. He was then exhumed and carried to Baghdad. His son Muḥammad took his place in guarding the lands. Ḥāmid b. al-ʿAbbās, Abū Muḥammad: Al-Muqtadir bi-llāh appointed him vizier in the year 306 AH. He was wealthy, with four hundred mamlūks bearing arms, [each of whom had mamlūks], and a thousand seven hundred chamberlains screened him. He had long supervised Fārs, and his supervision continued in Wāsiṭ. His brother-in-law Abū al-Ḥusayn b. Bisṭām, when he traveled, had with him forty Bactrian camels loaded with couches for him to sit on, one loaded with the skewers of the kitchen, and with him were four hundred prayer rugs. When Ḥāmid was arrested, this brother-in-law of his was fined three hundred thousand dinars. Ḥāmid was outwardly generous and gave much. Abū Bakr al-Ṣūlī related that Shafīʿ al-Muqtadirī complained to him about the exhaustion of his barley, so he pulled the inkwell and wrote for him a hundred kurr of barley. Ibn al-Ḥawārī said to him: Then I will write for him a hundred kurr. Naṣr al-Ḥājib looked at him, so he wrote for him a hundred kurr, and he wrote for Umm Mūsā a hundred kurr, and for Muʾnis the servant a hundred kurr. Abū ʿAlī al-Tanūkhī related from one of the secretaries, who said: I attended the table of Ḥāmid when there were twenty people at it. I had heard that he spent two hundred dinars on it every day, and I considered what I saw little. Then I went out and saw in the house more than thirty tables set up, with thirty people at each table, each table like the one before him, including the cold dishes and sweets. He would not invite anyone to his food; rather, he would send food to every group in their places. From al-Qāḍī Abū al-Ḥasan Muḥammad b. ʿAbd al-Wāḥid al-Hāshimī, who said: Ḥāmid b. al-ʿAbbās was among the most open-handed people we have seen, the finest in manly virtue, the most blessed with wealth, the most generous, and the most attentive to his manly virtue. In his house he would set up several tables every day, and no one would leave the house—whether of the elite, the common people, the retinue, or others—when food was presented without eating, even people's servants, so that sometimes forty tables would be set up in his house in a single day. He used to provide meat along with bread to every person to whom he gave a ration, and all his rations were of fine white bread. One day he entered his hallway and saw a broad-bean pod there, so he summoned his steward and said, "Woe to you! Are broad beans eaten in my house?" The steward said, "This is from the doorkeepers." He said, "Do they not have meat rations?" He said, "Yes." He said, "Ask them the reason." So he asked them, and they said, "We cannot enjoy eating meat without our families, so we send it to them to eat with them at night, and we go hungry in the mornings, so we eat broad beans." So Ḥāmid ordered that rations be provided for their families, carried to their homes, and that they eat their own rations in the hallway. This was done. A few days later, he saw a broad-bean pod in the hallway, and he became furious—for he had a sharp temper—and he reviled his steward and said, "Did I not double the rations? Why then are there broad-bean pods in my hallway?" The steward said, "When the rations were doubled, they made the first for their families every day, and they began accumulating the second with the butcher. When they leave their shift and go during the day to their homes on their rest day, they take the accumulated meat from the butcher and enjoy it at leisure." He said, "Let the rations remain as they are, and have a table set up every day and night, placed in the morning before our tables are set, from which these people are fed. By God, if I find another broad-bean pod in my hallway after this, I will beat you and all of them with rods." He did that, and the increase in expenditure of wealth on this was immense. Al-Muḥsin said: Hibat Allāh b. Muḥammad b. Yūsuf al-Munajjim narrated to me, saying: My grandfather narrated to me, saying: A woman stood before Ḥāmid b. al-ʿAbbās on the road and complained to him of poverty, and she handed him a petition she had with her. When he sat down, he signed for her two hundred dinars. The money-changer disapproved of paying such an amount to someone like her, so he referred back to him. Ḥāmid said, "By God, I had only intended to give her two hundred dirhams, but God Almighty caused two hundred dinars to flow to her through my hands, and I will not retract that. Give it to her." So he paid her. A few days later, a man handed him a petition in which he mentioned that he and his wife had been poor, and she had presented a petition to the vizier, who gave her two hundred dinars, and she began lording it over him and now wanted to torment him into divorcing her. He asked if the vizier would see fit to sign for someone to restrain her. Ḥāmid laughed and signed for him two hundred dinars, and said, "Tell him, say to her: Your wealth has now become equal to hers, so she cannot demand divorce from you." The man took the money and left a wealthy man. Al-Muḥsin said, with his chain of narration from Abū al-Ḥusayn Aḥmad b. al-Ḥusayn b. al-Muthannā, who said: When Ḥāmid b. al-ʿAbbās arrived at al-Ubulla, heading for al-Ahwāz, while he was vizier, I went out to meet him. I saw that he had a river barge whose sailors were white eunuchs, and in its middle an old man was reciting the Qurʾān. It was shaded and curtained. I asked about that, and they said, "This is the barge of the women's quarters; it is not proper that its sailors be uncastrated men." Al-Muḥsin said, with his chain of narration from Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Qunūtī, who said: Ḥāmid, while he was governor of Wāsiṭ, rode out to a garden of his and saw on his way a burned house and an old man weeping and wailing, with children and women around him in the same state. He asked about him and was told: "This is a merchant whose house burned down and he became poor." He paused for a while, then said, "Where is so-and-so the steward?" He came, and Ḥāmid said to him, "I want to assign you a task. If you do it as I wish, I will do for you and treat you—and he mentioned something good. If you exceed my instructions in it, I will do to you and treat you—and he mentioned something bad." The steward said, "Give your command." He said, "Do you see this old man? My heart aches for him, and my outing has been spoiled because of him. I cannot bring myself to go to my garden unless you guarantee to me that when I return in the evening from the outing, I will find the old man in his house, rebuilt and plastered and clean, with kinds of goods, furnishings, and brass vessels as they were, and that winter and summer clothing be provided for him and his family like what they had." The steward rose and instructed the treasurer to release what was needed, and the chief of police to stand with him and bring the craftsmen he requested. Ḥāmid gave instructions for that—and it was summer—so he ordered various artisans brought. They would demolish one part while others built. The owner of the house was told, "Write down everything you lost, even the broom and the fire-striker." By the time the afternoon prayer was performed, the house had been roofed, plastered, and the doors locked; nothing remained but the small windows. The man sent word to Ḥāmid asking him to remain in the garden and not ride back until after the last evening prayer. The house was whitewashed, swept, and furnished; the old man and his family put on the clothes; and chests and cabinets were handed over to them, filled with goods. Ḥāmid passed by while people had gathered as if it were a festival day, raising their voices in supplication for him. Then Ḥāmid instructed the money-changer to give five thousand dirhams to the old man as an addition to his capital, and Ḥāmid went on to his house. Al-Muḥsin said: Abū al-Ḥasan b. al-Maʾmūn al-Hāshimī narrated to me that in his downfall, in which he was killed, four hundred thousand dinars in cash were found for Ḥāmid in a well in a privy of his. He pointed to it when the demands upon him became severe. Someone else informed me that Ḥāmid had built a room and put a privy in it. He would instruct his steward to bring the dinars, and whenever he had a purse, he would take it under his clothes and go, as if to urinate. He would enter that privy, throw the purse into the well, and come out without pouring water into it or urinating, making the servant think he had done so. When he left, the privy was locked and no one else entered it, as was the custom with royal privies. When he wanted to enter, the servant designated for ablution would open it for him, and that servant, designated for ablution, did not know the secret. When the money was complete, he said, "This privy has become blocked; close it up." It was closed and abandoned. When the demands upon him became severe, he pointed to it, and what was in it was taken out. When al-Muqtadir dismissed Ḥāmid, he agreed with Ibn al-Furāt not to bring ruin upon him, saying, "We served without recompense." He stipulated that he be examined in the presence of judges and scribes. There had been a quarrel between him and Mufliḥ the eunuch, and harsh words occurred between them. Ḥāmid said, "By God, I will buy a hundred black slaves, make them commanders, and name each one Mufliḥ." So Mufliḥ reported to the caliph things he had not said, and advised that Ibn al-Furāt be sent to him, saying, "If you do not arrest him, his affairs will stop." The caliph ordered that, and he ordered Ibn al-Furāt to set aside a good house for him, furnish it with fine furnishings, and provide whatever foods he chose. Ḥāmid sold his house on the Ṣarāt from Nāzūk for twelve thousand dinars, and sold a servant of his for three thousand dinars. Ḥāmid acknowledged one million two hundred thousand dinars. He was taken down to Wāsiṭ in Ramaḍān of this year, and Muḥammad b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Bazūfarī took charge of him. Al-Bazūfarī had previously looked after Ḥāmid's interests. When Ḥāmid fell ill, al-Bazūfarī wanted to protect himself, so he brought the qadi of Wāsiṭ and its witnesses to inform them that he had died a natural death. When the witnesses entered upon him, he said to them, "Ibn al-Furāt, the disbeliever, the wicked one, the Rāfiḍī, made a pact with me and swore by the oaths of allegiance that if I acknowledged my wealth, he would protect me from harm. But when I acknowledged it, he handed me over to his son, who served me poisoned eggs. So al-Bazūfarī has no hand in my blood up to this time, but he has denied my kindness." Ḥāmid died in Ramaḍān of this year. ʿAbd Allāh b. Isḥāq b. Ibrāhīm b. Ḥammād b. Yaʿqūb, Abū Muḥammad al-Anmāṭī al-Madāʾinī: He settled in Baghdad and narrated there from al-Ṣalt b. Masʿūd al-Jaḥdarī and ʿUthmān b. Abī Shayba. Ibn al-Jiʿābī and Ibn Muẓaffar narrated from him. Al-Dāraquṭnī said: "Trustworthy, reliable." He died in Dhū al-Qaʿda of this year. Muḥammad b. Isḥāq b. Khuzayma, [b. al-Mughīra] b. Ṣāliḥ b. Bakr al-Sulamī, client of Mujashshar b. Muzāḥim, Abū Bakr: He traveled through the lands in search of hadith. He heard in Naysābūr from Ibn Rāhawayh and others; in Marw from ʿAlī b. Ḥajar and others; in al-Rayy from Muḥammad b. Mahrān and others; in Baghdad from Aḥmad b. Manīʿ and others; in al-Baṣra from Bishr b. Muʿādh al-ʿAqadī and others; in al-Kūfa from Abū Kurayb and others; in the Ḥijāz from ʿAbd al-Jabbār b. al-ʿAlāʾ and others; [in Syria from Mūsā b. Sahl al-Ramlī and others; in the Jazīra from ʿAbd al-Jabbār b. al-ʿAlāʾ and others]; in Egypt from Yūnus b. ʿAbd al-Aʿlā and others; and he heard in Wāsiṭ from Muḥammad b. Ḥarb and others. A group of his shaykhs narrated from him, among them al-Bukhārī and Muslim. He was outstanding in the science of hadith and other fields. From Abū Muḥammad b. al-Khaṭīb, who said: I heard Abū al-Ḥārith Rawḥ b. Aḥmad b. Rawḥ say: I heard Abū al-ʿAbbās Aḥmad b. al-Muẓaffar al-Bakrī say: I heard Muḥammad b. Hārūn al-Ṭabarī say: I, Muḥammad b. Naṣr al-Marwazī, Muḥammad b. ʿAlawayh al-Wazzān, and Muḥammad b. Isḥāq b. Khuzayma were at the door of al-Rabīʿ b. Sulaymān in Egypt, listening to the books of al-Shāfiʿī from him. We remained three days and nights without eating anything, and our provisions were exhausted. I said, "Now begging is permissible for us; who will ask?" Each of us was ashamed to ask, so we said, "Let us draw lots." The lot fell on Muḥammad b. Isḥāq b. Khuzayma. He said, "Let me pray two rakʿas." He prostrated, making the supplication of istikhāra, when suddenly there was a knock on the door. One of us went out and found a servant of Aḥmad b. Ṭūlūn, the ruler of Egypt, with a candle before him [and a candle behind him]. He asked permission and entered, then greeted and sat down. He put his hand into his sleeve and took out a note, saying, "Who is Muḥammad b. Naṣr al-Marwazī?" We said, "This one." He took out a purse containing fifty dinars and gave it to him. Then he said, "The emir Aḥmad b. Ṭūlūn sends you greetings and says: Spend this; when it is gone, we will send you the like." [He said, "Who is Muḥammad b. ʿAlawayh al-Wazzān?" We said, "This one," and he gave him the like.] Then he said, "Who is Muḥammad b. Hārūn al-Ṭabarī?" I said, "I am," and he gave me the like. Then he said, "Who is Muḥammad b. Isḥāq b. Khuzayma?" We said, "That one prostrating." He waited until he raised his head from prostration, then gave him the like. We said to him, "We will not accept this from you until you tell us the story." He said, "The emir Aḥmad b. Ṭūlūn was taking a midday nap when someone came to him in his sleep and said, 'O Aḥmad, what will be your excuse tomorrow before God when you stand before Him and He asks you about four of the people of knowledge who have gone three days without eating anything?' He woke up terrified and alarmed, so he wrote your names, put these purses together, and sent me to look for you. I had been asking about you until I found you just now." [Ibn al-Jawzī said:] Similar stories have been narrated before about al-Ḥasan b. Sufyān al-Nasawī. Abū Bakr b. Khuzayma died on Saturday night, the eighth of Dhū al-Qaʿda of this year, and was buried in a room of his house; later that house was turned into a cemetery. Muḥammad b. Aḥmad b. al-Ṣalt b. Dīnār, Abū Bakr al-Kātib: He heard Wahb b. Baqiyya and others; he is sometimes called Aḥmad b. Muḥammad b. al-Ṣalt, but the former is more famous. From ʿUmar b. Jaʿfar al-Baṣrī, who said: Muḥammad b. Aḥmad b. al-Ṣalt is trustworthy, reliable. He died in Muḥarram of this year. Muḥammad b. Ismāʿīl b. ʿAlī b. al-Nuʿmān b. Rāshid, Abū Bakr al-Bundār, known as al-Baṣalānī: He heard ʿAlī b. al-Ḥusayn al-Dirhamī, Khālid b. Yūsuf al-Samtī, Bundār, and others. From ʿAlī b. Muḥammad b. Naṣr al-Dīnawarī, who said: I heard Ḥamza b. Yūsuf al-Sahmī say: I asked al-Dāraquṭnī about Muḥammad b. Ismāʿīl al-Baṣalānī, and he said, "Trustworthy." He died in Shaʿbān of this year. Yānas al-Muwaffaqī: He had a thousand fighting men among the best cavalry and infantry at the base of the wall of his house. He died in this year, leaving estates that yielded thirty thousand dinars. Among the notable men who died in this year: ʿUmar b. Muḥammad b. Bujayr al-Bujayrī, author of the "Ṣaḥīḥ."
