Jaʿfar b. al-Junayd al-Rāzī, who said: I heard Yūsuf b. al-Ḥusayn say: It was said to me that Dhū al-Nūn al-Miṣrī knows the Greatest Name of God. So I entered Egypt and went to him. He saw me while I had a long beard and with me was a tall water-skin. He found my appearance repulsive and paid no attention to me. Then after some days a man of theological debate came to him and argued with Dhū al-Nūn. Dhū al-Nūn could not stand against him with proofs, so I took him aside and debated with him and defeated him. Then Dhū al-Nūn recognized my merit. He rose to me, embraced me, and sat before me—he an old man and I a young one—and said: Excuse me, I did not know you. I excused him and served him for a year. When after the end of the year I said to him: O master, I have served you, and my right upon you has become due. It was said to me that you know the Greatest Name of God. You have come to know me, and you will not find a place for it like me, so I would like you to teach it to me. He said: Dhū al-Nūn was silent and did not answer me, as if he hinted to me that he would inform me. He said: Then he left me for six months after that. Then he brought out to me from his house a covered dish tied in a cloth—Dhū al-Nūn used to live in al-Jīzah—and said: Do you know so-and-so, our friend in al-Fusṭāṭ? I said: Yes. He said: I would like you to deliver this to him. I took the dish while it was tied and began walking the length of the road, thinking about it—something like Dhū al-Nūn sending to so-and-so, what could it be? He said: I could not bear it until I reached the bridge. I untied the cloth and lifted the cover, and behold, a mouse jumped from the dish and ran off. He said: I became intensely angry and said: Dhū al-Nūn is mocking me, sending a mouse with someone like me. So I returned in that anger. When he saw me he knew what was in me, and said: O fool, we were only testing you. I entrusted you with a mouse and you betrayed me—how then with the Greatest Name of God? Depart from me, I do not want to see you. From Muḥammad b. Aḥmad al-Mufīd, who said: I heard Abū al-Ḥasan ʿAlī b. Ibrāhīm al-Rāzī say: Abū Khalaf al-Wazzān related to me from Yūsuf b. al-Ḥusayn that he was seen in a dream, and it was said to him: What did God do with you? He said: He forgave me and had mercy on me. It was said: By what means? He said: By a word or words I said at death. I said: O God, I advised people in speech and betrayed myself in action, so grant me the betrayal of my action for the sake of the sincerity of my speech. Yūsuf died in this year. Yamūt b. al-Muzarriʿ al-ʿAbdī: From ʿAbd al-Qays, a Basran. He came to Baghdad and transmitted there from Abū ʿUthmān al-Māzinī, Abū Ḥātim al-Sijistānī, and Abū al-Faḍl al-Riyāshī. He was a man of reports, belles-lettres, and witty anecdotes. He was the son of the sister of al-Jāḥiẓ. His name was Yamūt, then he called himself Muḥammad, but the first name prevailed over him. From Muḥammad b. al-Yazdī, who said: Al-Ḥusayn b. ʿUmar b. Muḥammad al-Qāḍī informed me in his book, saying: I heard Yamūt b. al-Muzarriʿ say: I was afflicted with the name my father gave me, for when I visit a sick person and ask permission to enter, it is said: Who is this? I say: I am Ibn al-Muzarriʿ, and I drop my name. Yamūt died in Tiberias, and it is said in Damascus, in this year, may God have mercy on him.
