The affair of al-Husayn b. Hamdan
ذِكْرُ عِدَّةِ حَوَادِثَ فِي سَنَةُ ثَلَاثٍ وَثَلَاثِمِائَةٍ أَغَارَتِ الرُّومُ عَلَى الثُّغُورِ الْجَزْرِيَّةِ ، وَقَصَدُوا حِصْنَ مَنْصُورٍ، وَسَبَوْا مَنْ فِيهِ وَجَرَى عَلَى النَّاسِ أَمْرٌ عَظِيمٌ، وَكَانَتِ الْجُنُودُ مُتَشَاغِلَةً بِأَمْرِ الْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ حَمْدَانَ. وَفِيهَا عَادَ الْحُجَّاجُ وَقَدْ لَقُوا مِنَ الْعَطَشِ وَالْخَوْفِ شِدَّةً، وَخَرَجَ جَمَاعَةٌ مِنَ الْعَرَبِ عَلَى أَبِي حَامِدٍ وَرْقَاءَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ الْمُرَتَّبِ ( عَلَى الثَّعْلَبِيَّةِ ) لِحِفْظِ الطَّرِيقِ، فَقَاتَلَهُمْ، وَظَفِرَ بِهِمْ، وَقَتَلَ جَمَاعَةً مِنْهُمْ، وَأَسَرَ الْبَاقِينَ وَحَمَلَهُمْ إِلَى بَغْدَاذَ، فَأَمَرَ الْمُقْتَدِرُ بِتَسْلِيمِهِمْ إِلَى صَاحِبِ الشُّرْطَةِ لِيَحْبِسَهُمْ، فَثَارَتْ بِهِمُ الْعَامَّةُ فَقَتَلُوهُمْ وَأَلْقَوْهُمْ فِي دِجْلَةَ. وَفِيهَا ظَهَرَ بِالْجَامِدَةِ إِنْسَانٌ زَعَمَ أَنَّهُ عَلَوِيٌّ فَقَتَلَ الْعَامِلَ بِهَا وَنَهَبَهَا، وَأَخَذَ مِنْ دَارِ الْخَرَاجِ أَمْوَالًا كَثِيرَةً، ثُمَّ قُتِلَ بَعْدَ ظُهُورِهِ بِيَسِيرٍ، وَقُتِلَ مَعَهُ جَمَاعَةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِهِ، وَأُسِرَ جَمَاعَةٌ. وَفِيهَا ظَهَرَتِ الرُّومُ وَعَلَيْهِمُ الْغَثِيطُ فَأَوْقَعُوا بِجَمَاعَةٍ مِنْ مُقَاتِلَةِ طَرَسُوسَ وَالْغُزَاةِ، فَقَتَلُوا مِنْهُمْ نَحْوَ سِتِّمِائَةِ فَارِسٍ، وَلَمْ يَكُنْ لِلْمُسْلِمِينَ صَائِفَةٌ. وَفِيهَا خَرَجَ مَلِيحٌ الْأَرْمَنِيُّ إِلَى مَرْعَشَ، فَعَاثَ فِي بَلَدِهَا، وَأَسَرَ جَمَاعَةً مِمَّنْ حَوْلَهَا وَعَادَ. وَفِيهَا وَقَعَ الْحَرِيقُ بِبَغْدَاذَ فِي عِدَّةِ مَوَاضِعَ، فَاحْتَرَقَ كَثِيرٌ مِنْهَا. وفِيهَا وَقَفَ الْمُقْتَدِرُ بِاللَّهِ أَمْوَالًا جَزِيلَةً وَضِيَاعًا عَلَى الْحَرَمَيْنِ الشَّرِيفَيْنِ وَاسْتَدْعَى بِالْقُضَاةِ وَالْأَعْيَانِ وَأَشْهَدَهُمْ عَلَى نَفْسِهِ بِمَا وَقَفَهُ مِنْ ذَلِكَ. وَفِي ذِي الْحِجَّةِ مِنْ هَذِهِ السَّنَةِ مَرِضَ الْمُقْتَدِرُ بِاللَّهِ ثَلَاثَةَ عَشَرَ يَوْمًا، وَلَمْ يَمْرَضْ فِي خِلَافَتِهِ مَعَ طُولِهَا إِلَّا هَذِهِ الْمَرْضَةَ. وَفِي [يَوْمِ] الْأَرْبِعَاءِ لِتِسْعٍ خَلَوْنَ مِنْ رَمَضَانَ انْقَطَعَ كُرْسِيُّ الْجِسْرِ وَالنَّاسُ عَلَيْهِ فَغَرِقَ خَلْقٌ كَثِيرٌ. وَفِي لَيْلَةِ الْجُمْعَةِ لِثَمَانٍ بَقِينَ مِنْ رَمَضَانَ انْقَضَّ كَوْكَبٌ عَظِيمٌ وَبَقِيَ ضَوْؤُهُ سَاعَةً كَالْمِقْبَاسِ.
Translation
✧ Mention of Several Events In the year 303 AH, the Byzantines raided the Jaziran frontier fortresses, and they headed for the fortress of Manṣūr, and they took captive those who were in it, and a great calamity befell the people. The armies were preoccupied with the affair of al-Ḥusayn b. Ḥamdān. In this year the pilgrims returned, having suffered severe thirst and fear. A group of Arabs came out against Abū Ḥāmid Warqāʾ b. Muḥammad, who was stationed at al-Thaʿlabiyya to guard the road, and he fought them and prevailed over them, killing a group of them and capturing the rest. He carried them to Baghdād, and al-Muqtadir ordered that they be handed over to the chief of police to imprison them. But the common people rose against them and killed them and threw them into the Tigris. In this year, a man appeared in al-Jāmida claiming to be an ʿAlid. He killed the governor there and plundered it, and he took much money from the tax house. Then he was killed shortly after his appearance, and a group of his companions were killed with him, and a group were captured. In this year, the Byzantines appeared, led by al-Ghaṭīṭ, and they fell upon a group of the fighters of Ṭarsūs and the volunteers, killing about six hundred horsemen of them. The Muslims had no summer expedition. In this year, Malīḥ al-Armanī went out to Marʿash and wrought havoc in its territory, capturing a group of those around it, and then returned. In this year, a fire broke out in Baghdād in several places, and much of it burned. In this year, al-Muqtadir bi-llāh endowed substantial funds and estates for the two noble sanctuaries, and he summoned the judges and notables and made them witnesses to what he had endowed of that. In Dhū al-Ḥijja of this year, al-Muqtadir bi-llāh fell ill for thirteen days, and he had not fallen ill during his long caliphate except for this illness. On Wednesday, nine nights having passed of Ramaḍān, the pontoon bridge collapsed while people were on it, and many people drowned. On Friday night, eight nights remaining of Ramaḍān, a great star shot across the sky, and its light remained for an hour like a torch.
