✧ Those of the notables who died in the year three hundred: Ibrāhīm b. Mūsā b. Jamīl, Abū Isḥāq al-Andalusī, client of Banū Umayyah Ibrāhīm b. Mūsā b. Jamīl, Abū Isḥāq al-Andalusī, client of Banū Umayyah: He transmitted from Ibn Qutaybah and Ibn Abī al-Dunyā, and he was trustworthy. He died in Egypt in Jumādā al-Ūlā of this year. Al-Aḥwaṣ b. al-Mufaḍḍal b. Ghassān b. al-Mufaḍḍal b. Muʿāwiyah b. ʿAmr b. Khālid b. Ghilāb al-Aḥwaṣ b. al-Mufaḍḍal b. Ghassān b. al-Mufaḍḍal b. Muʿāwiyah b. ʿAmr b. Khālid b. Ghilāb: And on the authority of Abū Bakr Aḥmad b. ʿAlī [b. Thābit] who said: Ghilāb is a woman, and she is the mother of Khālid b. al-Ḥārith b. Aws b. al-Nābighah, and al-Aḥwaṣ is given the kunyah Abū Umayyah al-Ghilābī. He transmitted from his father the book of history, and [transmitted] from a group, and he traded in cloth in Baghdad. Ibn al-Furāt hid with him, and said to him: "If I become vizier, what would you like me to do for you?" He said: "Appoint me to some office of the sultan." He said: "Woe to you! Neither a governor, nor an emir, nor a commander, nor a scribe, nor a chief of police comes from you, so what can I appoint you to?" He said: "I do not know." He said: "I will appoint you to the judiciary." He said: "I have accepted." Then Ibn al-Furāt emerged, became vizier, and was kind to Abū Umayyah, favored him, and appointed him judge of al-Baṣrah, Wāsiṭ, and al-Ahwāz. Abū Umayyah went down to his offices and resided in al-Baṣrah. He had little knowledge and erred, except that his chastity and self-restraint [covered] his deficiency. He remained in al-Baṣrah until Ibn Kundāj, emir of al-Baṣrah, seized him during one of the calamities of al-Muqtadir against Ibn al-Furāt. There was estrangement between Abū Umayyah and Ibn Kundāj, so he put him in prison, and he remained there for a period until he died in it. We do not know of any judge who died in prison besides him. It reached me from another route that there was estrangement between al-Aḥwaṣ and Ibn Kundāj, emir of al-Baṣrah. He would not ride to him and would oppose him in matters of injustice, so he would slip from his hand and write to Ibn al-Furāt, who would answer him with thunderbolts and command him to hear and obey. Until a letter arrived by bird to Ibn Kundāj ordering the arrest of Ibn al-Furāt, so he rode to al-Aḥwaṣ, seized him, made him walk before him the length of the road to his house, and put him in prison. He remained there for a period, then died. Then Ibn al-Furāt returned to the vizierate and was told of that, so he grieved and said: "Does he have a son?" A son of his was brought, in whom there was negligence, so he said: "This one is not suitable," and gave him money. Jaʿfar b. Muḥammad b. Sulaymān, Abū al-Faḍl al-Khallāl al-Dūrī Jaʿfar b. Muḥammad b. Sulaymān, Abū al-Faḍl al-Khallāl al-Dūrī: Abū Bakr al-Shāfiʿī transmitted from him, and he died in the middle of Shawwāl of this year. Al-Ḥusayn b. ʿUmar b. Abī al-Aḥwaṣ, Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Kūfī al-Ḥusayn b. ʿUmar b. [Abī] al-Aḥwaṣ, Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Kūfī: He was born in the year two hundred and fifteen, and he transmitted in Baghdad. Al-Shāfiʿī and Ibn al-Jaʿābī heard from him, and he was trustworthy. He died in Baghdad in Qaṭīʿat al-Rabīʿ in Ramaḍān of this year, and was carried to al-Kūfah [and buried there]. ʿUbayd Allāh b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Ṭāhir b. al-Ḥusayn b. Muṣʿab, Abū Aḥmad al-Khuzāʿī ʿUbayd Allāh b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Ṭāhir b. al-Ḥusayn b. Muṣʿab, Abū Aḥmad al-Khuzāʿī: He was the brother of Muḥammad b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Ṭāhir. He governed Baghdad, and transmitted from al-Zubayr b. Bakkār. Al-Ṣūlī and al-Ṭabarānī transmitted from him. He was a refined, virtuous, eloquent poet. And on the authority of Muḥammad b. Yaḥyā, who said: ʿUbayd Allāh [b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Ṭāhir recited to me his own verse]: Rightly for the people of passion is correspondence that makes the eye of separation flow, and in closeness, may his life never end, visits that cure the burning of longing. And on the authority of Abū al-Ḥasan ʿAlī b. Hārūn b. ʿAlī b. Yaḥyā, who said: My father was living next to ʿUbayd Allāh b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Ṭāhir, then he moved away from him to a house he bought [on the Nahr al-Mahdī], which was a house that had belonged to Isḥāq b. Ibrāhīm al-Mawṣilī. ʿUbayd Allāh wrote to him, feeling estranged [for him]: O you who have moved away from us while he was fond of us, you have gone very far, so be it; you used to meet us. Know that if you have exchanged our neighborhood, you have exchanged a neighbor, but you have not exchanged brothers. Hārūn b. ʿAlī answered him: I have gone far from you in my house, but not in my pure affection and my covenant, which are as they were. Since I parted from your nearness, I have not exchanged it except for sorrows I endure and griefs. Does anyone rejoice in dwelling in his house when his beloved ones are not neighbors to the house? And on the authority of Abū Aḥmad al-Faḍl b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Jaʿfar al-Shīrāzī, who said: Abū Sulaymān [b.] al-Thallāj told me, saying: My father said: The origin of my wealth was from the price of five raṭls of snow. That was because snow became scarce in one of the years in Baghdad, and I had some of it. I sold it, and five raṭls remained with me. A slave-girl of ʿUbayd Allāh b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Ṭāhir fell ill; she was his spirit from this world, and he was then emir of Baghdad. He asked for snow, so he sent to me. I said: "I have only one raṭl, and I will not sell it except for five thousand dirhams," [and I had known the situation]. The agent did not dare to buy that and returned to ask ʿUbayd Allāh's permission. ʿUbayd Allāh reviled him and said: "Buy it for whatever price, and do not come back to me." He came to me and said: "Take five thousand dirhams and give me the raṭl." I said: "I will not sell it to you except for ten thousand dirhams!" He did not dare to go back, and gave me ten thousand [dirhams] and took the raṭl. I gave the sick girl to drink of it, and her soul grew strong, and she said: "I want another raṭl." The agent came to me with ten thousand dirhams and said: "[Give me] another raṭl," and I sold it to him. When the sick girl drank it, she recovered and asked for more. They came seeking that, and I said: "I have only one raṭl left, and I will not sell it except with an increase." [He coaxed me] and gave me ten thousand dirhams. Then I wanted to drink some of it myself so that I could say I drank snow worth ten thousand dirhams per raṭl. So I drank a raṭl of it. The agent came to me near dawn and said: "[By God, by God], the girl has recovered, by God. If you have any of it, set your own price for its sale." I said: "By God, I have only one raṭl, and I will not sell it except for thirty thousand." He said: "Take it." I felt ashamed before God to sell a raṭl of snow for thirty thousand, so I said: "Give me twenty thousand, and know that if you came to me after this with the earth's fill of gold, you would not find anything with me." He gave it to me. When she drank it, she revived and ate food. ʿUbayd Allāh gave a great amount of wealth as charity. [He said:] He called me the next day and said: "You, after God [Almighty and Glorious], have restored [my life] by the life of my slave-girl, so set your own price." I said: "I am the emir's servant and slave." So he employed me in his drink and snow and much of the affairs of his house. Those dirhams were the origin of my wealth. ʿUbayd Allāh died in Shawwāl of this year. ʿAbd Allāh b. Muḥammad b. Abī Kāmil, Abū Muḥammad al-Fazārī ʿAbd Allāh b. Muḥammad b. Abī Kāmil, Abū Muḥammad al-Fazārī: He used to live in the City of al-Manṣūr and transmitted from Hawdhah and Dāwūd b. Rashīd. Abū ʿAlī b. al-Ṣawwāf and Ibn al-Jaʿābī transmitted from him. He died in Rabīʿ al-Ākhir of this year at the age of ninety-four [years]. ʿAlī b. Ṭayfūr b. Ghālib, Abū al-Ḥasan al-Nasawī ʿAlī b. Ṭayfūr b. Ghālib, Abū al-Ḥasan al-Nasawī: He resided in Baghdad and transmitted there from Qutaybah. Abū Bakr al-Shāfiʿī and Ibn Mālik al-Qaṭīʿī transmitted from him, and he was trustworthy. He died in Ṣafar of this year. Muḥammad b. Ibrāhīm b. Muṭarrif b. Muḥammad b. ʿAlī, Abū Aḥmad al-Istarābādhī Muḥammad b. Ibrāhīm b. Muṭarrif b. Muḥammad b. ʿAlī, Abū Aḥmad al-Istarābādhī: He was one of the chiefs of Istarābādh, and he was the one looked to among its people. He was a trustworthy, honest merchant known for good and for giving for the sake of God, Almighty and Glorious. He wrote down ḥadīth and transmitted, and it is said that he wrote from Abū Saʿīd al-Ashajj. He died in this year. Muḥammad b. Jaʿfar b. Muḥammad b. Ḥabīb b. Azhar, Abū ʿUmar al-Qattāt al-Kūfī Muḥammad b. Jaʿfar b. Muḥammad b. Ḥabīb b. Azhar, Abū ʿUmar al-Qattāt al-Kūfī: He came to Baghdad and transmitted there from Abū Nuʿaym al-Faḍl b. Dukayn, Minjāb [b.] al-Ḥārith, and Aḥmad b. Yūnus. Al-Khuṭabī, al-Shāfiʿī, al-Jaʿābī, and others transmitted from him. He was weak, and al-Dāraquṭnī said: They spoke about his hearing from Abū Nuʿaym. He died in Baghdad on the first of Jumādā al-Ūlā, and it was said: on the sixth of Jumādā al-Ūlā, in the year three hundred, and was carried on that day to al-Kūfah. Muḥammad b. Jaʿfar b. Muḥammad b. Ḥafṣ b. ʿUmar b. Rāshid, Abū Bakr al-Rabʿī al-Ḥanafī Muḥammad b. Jaʿfar b. Muḥammad b. Ḥafṣ b. ʿUmar b. Rāshid, Abū Bakr al-Rabʿī al-Ḥanafī: Known as Ibn al-Imām. He died on Wednesday, ten nights remaining of Dhū al-Ḥijjah of this year, and he was trustworthy. Muḥammad b. al-Ḥasan b. Sammāʿah b. Ḥayyān, Abū al-Ḥasan al-Ḥaḍramī Muḥammad b. al-Ḥasan b. Sammāʿah b. Ḥayyān, Abū al-Ḥasan al-Ḥaḍramī: He came to Baghdad and transmitted there from Abū Nuʿaym. Abū Bakr al-Shāfiʿī and others transmitted from him. Al-Dāraquṭnī said: He is not strong. He died in Baghdad on Monday, four nights remaining of Jumādā al-Ūlā, in the year three hundred. Muḥammad b. al-Ḥasan b. Muḥammad b. al-Ḥārith Muḥammad b. al-Ḥasan b. Muḥammad b. al-Ḥārith, Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Anbārī, known as al-Qaranjalī: He heard Isḥāq b. al-Buhlūl al-Tanūkhī. Al-Ismāʿīlī transmitted from him, and he was trustworthy. He died in this year]. And in it died among the notables: Al-Ṣanawbarī the poet al-Ṣanawbarī the poet. He is Aḥmad b. Muḥammad b. al-Ḥasan b. Marrār, Abū Bakr al-Ḍabbī al-Ṣanawbarī al-Ḥanbalī. Al-Ḥāfiẓ Ibn ʿAsākir said: He was an excellent poet, and he reported from ʿAlī b. Sulaymān al-Akhfash. Then he mentioned some of the gems of his poetry. Among that is his saying: Neither sleep do I know with it, nor sleeplessness; he who has a remnant of life knows these two. My tears, from how long they have raced, have grown weary, so they cannot race. I have a king whose form never appears but the pupils bow to it. I intended to kiss the fire of his cheek, and feared to draw near it and burn. And he also has: A sun that came to resemble a sun that went, and its limit in light is from his limit. It sets in his mouth, but then it rises on his cheek. Al-Ḥāfiẓ al-Bayhaqī transmitted from his shaykh al-Ḥākim, from Abū al-Faḍl Naṣr b. Muḥammad al-Ṭūsī, who said: Abū Bakr al-Ṣanawbarī recited to us, saying: Gray hair destroyed what youth built, and the fair women, and what was broken is broken. It turned ebony into ivory, so for the eyes there is from it, and for the hearts a turning. It is error in judgment that the falcon should be hated for its beauty while the crow is loved. And he also has, which Ibn ʿAsākir cited regarding a son of his who was weaned, and he began to cry for his mother's breast: They denied him the thing dearest to him of all creation and of his parents. They denied him his nourishment, though it had been lawful to him and before him. Wonder at him, at such a young age he loved, so separation guided itself to him. Ibrāhīm b. Aḥmad b. Muḥammad b. al-Muwallad, Abū Isḥāq al-Ṣūfī al-Wāʿiẓ al-Raqqī, one of its shaykhs. He transmitted ḥadīth, accompanied Abū ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Jallāʾ al-Dimashqī, al-Junayd, and others. Tammām b. Muḥammad and Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Sulamī transmitted from him. Ibn ʿAsākir cited from his poetry his saying: You have from me, despite the distance, a share that no beloved attained despite nearness. Over the eye there is a veil from other than you, and over the heart there is a watcher from your love. Your love is adorned in my eye and my heart, and the passion in it is deviating and mixed. How can the nearness of the physician avail a sick man whom you made sick, and you are the physician? And his saying: Silence is safety from every calamity; whoever attains it attains the best of portions. No calamity has befallen men greater in harm than a word from the mouth. The slip of this tongue is destructive, unlike the slip of the foot. Guard a tongue that will cast you into ruin; many a word has humbled a noble man. And in this year Aḥmad b. ʿAlī al-Jārūdī died, and it was said: in the year two hundred ninety-nine, which is correct. And in this year Aḥmad b. Yaʿqūb, the nephew of al-ʿAraq the reciter, died. And in it, in Rabīʿ al-Ākhir, Yaḥyā b. ʿAlī b. Yaḥyā al-Munajjim, known as al-Nadīm, died.
