Translation
✧ Mention of several events In the year 299 AH, Rustum, the amir of the frontier fortresses, led the summer expedition from the direction of Tarsus, accompanied by Damyānah. He besieged the fortress of Malīḥ al-Armanī, then entered his territory and burned it. In this year, al-ʿUṭayr and al-Aghbar, two of the commanders of Zakrawayh the Qarmaṭī, entered Baghdad under a pledge of safety. Al-Faḍl b. ʿAbd al-Malik led the people on the pilgrimage. In this year, a group of Qarmaṭians from the followers of Abū Saʿīd al-Jannābī came to the gate of Basra, over which Muḥammad b. Isḥāq b. Kundājīq was governor. Their arrival took place on a Friday while the people were at prayer. The cry went up that the Qarmaṭians had come, and those charged with guarding the gate of Basra went out to them. They saw two men of their number, and went out toward them. The Qarmaṭians killed one of them and turned back. Then Muḥammad b. Isḥāq went out against them with a force, but he did not see them. He sent a party in pursuit of them, and they caught up with them. They were about thirty men, and they fought them. A group was killed among them. Ibn Kundājīq returned and shut the gates of Basra, thinking that those Qarmaṭians were an advance guard for their companions. He wrote to the vizier in Baghdad, informing him of the arrival of the Qarmaṭians and requesting reinforcements. When morning came, and he saw no trace of the Qarmaṭians, he regretted what he had done. An army was sent to him from Baghdad with one of the commanders. In this year, the people of Tripoli in the West revolted against the Mahdī, ʿUbayd Allāh the ʿAlawī. He sent an army against it, which besieged it but did not capture it. Then the Mahdī sent his son Abū al-Qāsim in Jumādā II of the year 300 AH. He besieged it, endured with it, and pressed hard in the fighting. Provisions became scarce in the city until its people ate carrion. He captured the city by force, pardoned its people, took great wealth from those who stirred up the conflict, and imposed upon the people of the city all that he had spent on his army. He took the leading men of the city as hostages with him, appointed a governor over it, and departed. In this year, there were earthquakes in Kairouan the like of which had not been seen in severity and magnitude. The people of Kairouan rose up and killed about a thousand men of the Kutāma. Ibn al-Jawzī said: In this year, three comets appeared, one in Ramaḍān and two in Dhū al-Qaʿdah, remaining for days and then fading away. In this year, a plague occurred in the land of Fars, by reason of which seven thousand people died. In this year, the caliph became angry with the vizier ʿAlī b. Muḥammad b. al-Furāt, dismissed him from the vizierate, and ordered his house to be plundered. It was plundered in the ugliest manner. He appointed as vizier Abū ʿAlī Muḥammad b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Yaḥyā b. Khāqān, who had bound himself to the mother of a son of al-Muʿtaḍid for one hundred thousand dinars until she interceded for his appointment. In this year, many gifts arrived from the provinces, from Egypt, Khurasan, and elsewhere. Among them were five hundred thousand dinars from the Egyptian lands extracted from a treasure found there, without impediments as many of the ignorant sons of Adam claim, by trickery, cunning, and deceit, in order to consume the wealth of the vulgar masses and the ignorant rabble of little reason and understanding. In this treasure was found a human rib whose length was four spans and whose width was a span. It was mentioned that it was from the people of ʿĀd. God knows best. Among the gifts from Egypt was a he-goat that had an udder and yielded milk. Among them was a carpet sent by Ibn Abī al-Sāj among his gifts, its length seventy cubits and its width sixty cubits, made in ten years, of inestimable value. And there were magnificent gifts sent by Aḥmad b. Ismāʿīl b. Aḥmad al-Sāmānī from the lands of Khurasan, very many. Al-Faḍl b. ʿAbd al-Malik al-ʿAbbāsī, the amir of the pilgrimage for a long time, led the people on the pilgrimage in this year. Warqāʾ b. Muḥammad b. Warqāʾ b. Muḥammad b. Warqāʾ al-Shaybānī arrived, bringing captives from the Bedouin, each of whom had intended harm to the sultan, and he secured the road by seizing them.
