Nūḥ b. ʿAbd Allāh, Abū Isḥāq al-Muzakkī al-Ḥāfiẓ al-Zāhid: The imam of his age in Naysābūr in the knowledge of ḥadīth, narrators, and defects. He listened to many people and visited Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal and reviewed with him. His gathering was awe-inspiring. It was said that his supplication was answered. He owned nothing of this world except the house in which he lived and a shop from which he received seventeen dirhams every month for his sustenance, and he would not accept anything from anyone. Carrots were bought for him and cooked with vinegar, and he would eat them as a relish throughout the winter. He used to say: Al-Aswad b. Yazīd disagreed with the people regarding the husband of Barīrah, saying that he was a free man while the people said that he was a slave. He also said: Anyone from whom two men of knowledge have narrated, ignorance is lifted from him, and anyone from whom only one man narrates is unknown. When the time came, he would go to the market, so his teacher thought that he had eaten lunch at home, and his household thought that he had taken his lunch with him, while he was fasting.
