✧ The killing of Abu Thabit, amir of Tarsus, and the appointment of Ibn al-A'rabi In the year two hundred and eighty-seven, the Byzantines gathered and mustered in Rabi' al-Akhir, and came to the gate of Qalamya from Tarsus. Abu Thabit, amir of Tarsus, set out on a raid after the death of Ibn al-Ikhshid—he had been appointed as his successor at his death—and Abu Thabit proceeded in his raid as far as the river al-Rajan in pursuit of them. But he was unable to withstand them, and they killed a group of his companions and captured him along with others whom they took prisoner. Ibn Kalub had been raiding in Darb al-Salama. When he returned, he gathered the elders of the frontier so that they might agree upon an amir. They unanimously decided upon Ibn al-A'rabi, and they appointed him over their affairs. That was in Rabi' al-Akhir of this year.
