✧ This is the biography of Abū Aḥmad al-Muwaffaq, may God have mercy on him. He is the Amīr al-Nāṣir li-Dīn Allāh al-Muwaffaq bi-llāh Abū Aḥmad Muḥammad – Ṭalḥa – b. al-Mutawakkil ʿalā Allāh Jaʿfar b. Muḥammad al-Muʿtaṣim b. Hārūn al-Rashīd. His birth was on Wednesday, two nights into Rabīʿ al-Awwal in the year 229 AH. When his brother al-Muʿtamid attained the caliphate, he had already granted him succession after his brother Jaʿfar, and he gave him the title al-Muwaffaq bi-llāh. Later, when he killed the Zanj leader and routed his army, he assumed the title Nāṣir Dīn Allāh. The power of convening and dissolving, appointing and deposing, came to him, and the land tax was collected for him. The khuṭba was delivered for him from the pulpits, saying: O God, set right the Amīr al-Nāṣir li-Dīn Allāh Abū Aḥmad al-Muwaffaq bi-llāh, heir apparent of the Muslims, brother of the Commander of the Faithful. Then his death occurred six months before that of his brother al-Muʿtamid, may God have mercy on him. He was of abundant intellect, excellent management, generous, munificent, praiseworthy, brave, bold, a chief, good in conversation and company, just and of good conduct. He would sit to hear grievances with the judges present, and give justice to the wronged against the wrongdoer. He was learned in literature, genealogy, jurisprudence, and the governance of kingship, and other matters. He had very many virtues and meritorious deeds. His death occurred in the Ḥusaynī palace on Thursday night, eight nights remaining of Ṣafar. Ibn al-Jawzī said: He was forty-seven years old, less one month and some days.
