The Year 269 AH

✧ Al-Muwaffaq's seizure of the western city of the leader of the Zanj When al-Muwaffaq demolished the houses of the wicked one, he ordered the routes to be repaired so that the way for war would be wide enough for the fighters. Then he decided to remove the first bridge over the Nahr Abī al-Khaṣīb, because it allowed them to aid one another. He ordered a large ship to be filled with reeds, with naft placed in it, and a long mast set in its middle to prevent it from getting past the bridge when it stuck to it. Then he sent it at a moment when the Zanj were heedless and the tide was strong. It reached the bridge, and the Zanj became aware of it, so they came to it, pelted it with stones and earth, and some of them went down into the water and scuttled it, so it sank. A little of the bridge had burned, but the Zanj extinguished it. At that, al-Muwaffaq became concerned about the bridge. He called upon his companions and prepared the naft-throwers, workers, and axes, ordering them to head for it from the west and east of the river. Al-Muwaffaq rode with his companions and headed for the mouth of the Nahr Abī al-Khaṣīb. That was in the middle of Shawwāl in the year two hundred and sixty-nine. He overtook the party on the west of the river and routed the two commanders appointed over the bridge—Sulaymān b. Jāmiʿ and Ankalāy, the son of the wicked one—and burned it. After that, the other party came and did the same on the eastern side. They burned the bridge and went past it to the side of an enclosure where the wicked one's sumayriyyāt and equipment were made. All of that burned completely except for a little of the shadhawāt and sumayriyyāt that were in the river. They headed for a prison of the wicked one, and the Zanj fought them over it for an hour of the day. Then al-Muwaffaq's companions overcame them, released those inside, and burned everything they passed until they reached the house of Muṣliḥ, one of his oldest companions. They entered it, plundered it and what was in it, took his women and children captive, and rescued many people. Al-Muwaffaq and his companions returned safely. The wicked one and his companions withdrew from this side to the eastern side of the Nahr Abī al-Khaṣīb. Al-Muwaffaq took control of the western side, except for a small path on the second bridge. They repaired the roads, and that increased the terror of the wicked one and his companions. Many of his companions and commanders—those he had thought would never leave him—came together to seek amnesty. He granted it to them, and they came out in droves. Al-Muwaffaq treated them well and attached them to their peers. Then al-Muwaffaq wanted his companions to practice navigating the river in order to burn the second bridge. He would order them to bring shadhawāt into it and burn the dwellings along its sides. One day, a commander of the Zanj fled to him, bringing with him a judge they had and a minbar. That broke the resolve of the wicked ones. Then the wicked one appointed someone to guard the second bridge and filled it with men. Al-Muwaffaq ordered some of his companions to burn the ships near the bridge, and they did so until they burned them. That increased the wicked one's caution and his guarding of the bridge, lest it be burned and al-Muwaffaq seize the western side and destroy him. A group of his companions had remained in their dwellings near the second bridge. Al-Muwaffaq's companions would come to them and stand on the hidden paths. When they knew this, they resolved to burn the second bridge. Al-Muwaffaq ordered his son Abū al-ʿAbbās and the commanders to prepare for that, and ordered them to come from several directions to converge on the bridge. He supplied them with axes, naft, and tools. He himself entered the river with the shadhawāt, accompanied by the bravest of his young men, and he also had tools with him. Battle was joined on both sides between the two parties, and the fighting intensified. On the western side, facing Abū al-ʿAbbās and those with him, were Ankalāy the son of the wicked one and Sulaymān b. Jāmiʿ. On the eastern side, facing Rāshid, the client of al-Muwaffaq, and those with him, were the wicked one and al-Muhallabī with the rest of the army. The battle lasted about three hours. Then the wicked ones fled without turning back for anything. Swords were taken from them. The men of the shadhawāt entered the river and approached the bridge, fighting its defenders with arrows and setting fire to it. Among the fugitives were Sulaymān and Ankalāy, both of whom had been severely wounded. They reached the bridge while fire was in it, which prevented them from crossing. They and those with them threw themselves into the river, and many of them drowned. Ankalāy and Sulaymān escaped after being on the verge of death. The bridge was cut and burned. The army spread through the wicked one's city on both sides, burning many of their houses, palaces, and markets, and rescuing countless women and children. They entered the house in which the wicked one had lived after his palace was burned, burned it, and plundered what was in it that had survived with him. The wicked one fled, and that day the locations of his wealth were not discovered. On that day, women of the ʿAlawī family who had been imprisoned in a place near the house where he lived were rescued. Al-Muwaffaq treated them well and transported them. He opened a prison of his and brought out many people who had been fighting the wicked one. Al-Muwaffaq removed their iron shackles. That day he brought out of the Nahr Abī al-Khaṣīb all the shadhawāt, sea-going vessels, small and large ships, ḥarrāqāt, and other kinds of ships to the Tigris. Al-Muwaffaq granted them to his companions along with the spoils in them, which were of great value. Ankalāy, the son of the wicked one, sent to request amnesty and asked for certain things. Al-Muwaffaq granted them to him. But his father learned of it, reproached him, and turned him back from what he had resolved, so he returned to war and direct fighting. Sulaymān b. Mūsā al-Shaʿrānī, one of the wicked one's chiefs, sent to request amnesty, but al-Muwaffaq did not grant it to him because of his previous shedding of blood and corruption. Then word reached him that a group of the wicked one's chiefs had become weary of resistance, so he granted him amnesty. He sent shadhawāt to a place he named, and he came out with his brother, his family, and a group of his commanders. The wicked one sent men to prevent them, but they fought them and reached al-Muwaffaq. He increased his kindness to him, bestowed robes of honor on him and those with him, and ordered that he be displayed to the wicked one's companions so that their trust would grow. He did not leave his place until a group of Zanj commanders sought amnesty, among them Shibl b. Sālim. Al-Muwaffaq granted it to him and sent shadhawāt to him. He boarded them with his family, children, and a group of his commanders. Some of the Zanj met them and fought them, but he escaped and reached al-Muwaffaq. Al-Muwaffaq treated him well and gave him a generous reward. He was one of the wicked one's oldest companions, and that weighed heavily on him and his followers when they saw their chiefs' desire for amnesty. When al-Muwaffaq saw Shibl's sincerity and sound understanding, he ordered him to handle some matters. He set out at night with a group of Zanj, unmixed with others, to the wicked one's camp, knowing its location. He fell upon them, took captives, killed, and returned. Al-Muwaffaq treated him and his companions well. After this raid, the Zanj could no longer sleep at night and kept constant watch because of the terror that had entered them. Al-Muwaffaq continued to send raiding parties against the wicked one, to plot against him, and to cut off his food supplies. Al-Muwaffaq's companions trained in traversing those narrow passages in his territory and widened them.
