the accounts of past peoples from the Israelites and others
Translation
✧ Mention of the Companions of the Cave, and they were in the days of the regional kings. The Companions of the Cave were in the days of a king named Decius, and it is said Decianus, and they were in a city of Byzantium named Ephesus, and their king worshipped idols. They were youths who believed in their Lord, as God — Exalted is He — mentioned, saying: “Or have you reckoned that the Companions of the Cave and al-Raqīm were among Our signs a wonder?” And al-Raqīm is their account written on a tablet, placed at the door of the cave to which they repaired. It is said: Someone of the people of their time wrote it and placed it in the building, and in it were their names, in whose days they lived, and the cause of their coming to the cave. They were of the Byzantines, and they used to worship idols, and God guided them. Their religious law was the law of Jesus ﷺ. Some of them claimed that they were before the Messiah, and that the Messiah made his people aware of them, and that God raised them from their slumber after the ascension of the Messiah. The first is more correct. The Jews’ concern with their affair and their knowledge of their account indicates that their time was earlier than what some exegetes mentioned, that they were after the Messiah and that they were Christians.
