He left Naysābūr and appointed Ibrāhīm b. Naṣr as his deputy, who wreaked havoc in the town. Yaḥyā b. Muḥammad rose with many people and fought the commanders whom he had left behind. When Aḥmad returned, he sought Yaḥyā b. Muḥammad. He was brought to him and he killed him in Jumādā al-Ākhirah of this year. It is also said that he defeated him. According to Abū ʿAbd Allāh Muḥammad b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Ḥākim, he said: I heard al-Ḥasan b. Yaʿqūb al-Muʿaddal say: I heard Abū ʿAmr Aḥmad b. al-Mubārak al-Mustamlī say: I saw Yaḥyā b. Muḥammad in a dream and said: "What did God do with you?" He said: "He forgave me." I said: "Then what did He do with al-Khujustānī?" He said: "He is in a coffin of fire, and the key is in my hand." The devout worshipper from Yemen: The devout worshipper from Yemen. According to Muḥammad b. Sulaymān al-Qurashī, he said: While I was traveling on the road to Yemen, I came upon a young boy standing in the road with two earrings in his ears. In each earring there was a jewel whose light illuminated his face. He was glorifying his Lord with praise through lines of poetry. I heard him saying: "A king in heaven in whom is my pride, mighty in power, with no concealment." I approached him and greeted him. He said: "I will not return your greeting until you fulfill my right that is due upon you." I said: "What is your right?" He said: "I am a boy upon the creed of Ibrāhīm al-Khalīl ﷺ. I do not eat lunch or dinner [every day] until I travel a mile or two in search of a guest." So I agreed to that. He welcomed me, and I walked with him until we came near a tent of hair. When we drew near the tent, he called out: "O my sister!" A girl from the tent answered: "At your service!" He said: "Arise for our guest." The girl said: "Until I first give thanks to the Lord who has caused this guest to come to us." She stood and prayed two rakʿahs in gratitude to God. He said: Then he brought me into the tent and seated me. The boy took a knife and took a young goat and slaughtered it. When I sat in the tent, I looked at the most beautiful face among people. I would steal glances at her. She noticed some of my glances and said to me: "Hush! Do you not know that it has been transmitted to us from the companion of Yathrib that 'the fornication of the two eyes is looking'? Indeed, I did not intend by this to rebuke you, but I intended to discipline you so that you do not return to the like of this." When it was time to sleep, I spent the night with the boy outside, and the girl spent the night in the tent. I heard the murmur of the Qurʾān all night long in the most beautiful and most tender voice possible. When morning came, I said to the boy: "Whose voice was that?" He said: "That was my sister; she keeps the night alive until morning." I said: "O boy, you are more entitled to this act than your sister. You are a man and she is a woman." He said: Then he smiled and said to me: "Woe to you, young man! Do you not know that one is granted success and another is forsaken?" Among the notable persons who died in this year were: Ismāʿīl Sammuwayh, Isḥāq b. Ibrāhīm Shādhān, Baḥr b. Naṣr al-Khawlānī, Muḥammad b. ʿUzayz al-Aylī, and Yūnus b. Ḥabīb, the transmitter of the Musnad of Abū Dāwūd al-Ṭayālisī from him.
