Translation

✧ Reports of the Zanj In the year two hundred and sixty-five, there took place a battle between Aḥmad b. Laythawayh and Sulaymān b. Jāmiʿ, and the Zanj, in the vicinity of Janbulāʾ. The reason for it was that Sulaymān wrote to the Wicked One, informing him of the state of a canal called al-Zuhrī, and asking him to permit its construction, for if he carried it out, it would become possible for him to transport what was in Janbulāʾ and the Sawād of al-Kūfah. So he sent Nakrawayh to him for that purpose, and commanded him to assist him and to spend on the canal. So Sulaymān set out with those who were with him, and halted at al-Sharīṭah for about a month, and they began work on the canal. In the course of that, Sulaymān's companions were raiding the areas around them, and Aḥmad b. Laythawayh, who was al-Muwaffaq's governor at Janbulāʾ, encountered him. More than forty commanders of the Zanj were killed, and of their common soldiers a number too great to count, and he burned their ships. Sulaymān went off defeated to Ṭahthā. In this year, a group of the Zanj traveled in thirty sumayriyyah boats to Ḥabl, and they seized four ships laden with food and departed.
