✧ The Rebellion of the People of Barqah In the year two hundred and sixty-one, the people of Barqah rebelled against Ahmad b. Tulun and expelled their governor, Muhammad b. al-Faraj al-Farghani. Ibn Tulun sent an army against them under his ghulam Luʾluʾ, ordering him to treat them gently and employ leniency; if they submitted, well and good, otherwise the sword. The army marched until it encamped at Barqah and besieged its people, doing as they were commanded in the way of leniency. The people of Barqah grew bold, and one day they came out against part of the army, which was encamped at the gate of the town, and fell upon them, killing some of them. Luʾluʾ sent to his master Ahmad, informing him of the news. He ordered him to prosecute the war against them vigorously. So he set up mangonels against them and pressed the attack upon them. They sought quarter, and he granted them safe-conduct. They opened the gate to him, and he entered the town. He seized a group of their leaders, had them flogged, and cut off the hands of some of them. Taking a group of them with him, he returned to Egypt and appointed a governor over Barqah. When Luʾluʾ arrived in Egypt, Ahmad bestowed upon him a robe of honor containing two collars, which he placed around his neck, and the captives were paraded through the city.
