✧ The Killing of Manṣūr b. Jaʿfar al-Khayyāṭ In the year two hundred and fifty-eight, Manṣūr b. Jaʿfar al-Khayyāṭ was killed. The reason for his killing was that when the Basran ʿAlawī had finished the affair of al-Baṣrah, he appointed ʿAlī b. Abān to march to Jayy to fight Manṣūr b. Jaʿfar, who was at that time governor of al-Ahwāz. He encamped facing him for a month, while Manṣūr had only a small number of men, and ʿAlī's army was at al-Khayzurāniyyah. Then the vile one, the leader of the Zanj, sent to ʿAlī twelve shadhawāt vessels loaded with the elite of his companions, placing Abū al-Layth al-Aṣbahānī in command of them, and ordered him to obey ʿAlī. When he came to him, however, he disobeyed him and acted independently. Manṣūr came out for battle as he used to do, and Abū al-Layth advanced against him without ʿAlī's permission. Manṣūr defeated him and seized the shadhawāt vessels that were with him, killing many whites and Zanj in them. Abū al-Layth escaped and returned to the vile one. Then ʿAlī sent out scouts to bring him news of Manṣūr, and he made a night raid on a governor of Manṣūr's at Karnabā, killing him and most of his companions, plundering what was with them, and returning. The news reached Manṣūr, and he made a night raid on al-Khayzurāniyyah. ʿAlī came out against him, and they fought until noon. Then Manṣūr was routed, his companions scattered from him, and he became cut off from them. A band of the Zanj caught up with him, and he charged them and fought them until his spear broke and his arrows were exhausted. Then he urged his stallion to cross the river, but it did not cross. The reason for his fall was that one of the Zanj saw him when he wanted to cross the river, threw himself into the river before Manṣūr, and met the horse as it leaped, causing it to recoil. When Manṣūr fell into the river, the black man killed him and took his spoils. His brother Khalaf b. Jaʿfar and others were killed with him. Yārkūj then took over the governorship that Manṣūr b. Jaʿfar had held.
