And on the authority of Muḥammad b. Zuhayr b. He came to Baghdad and engaged in scholarly discussions with the memorizers there. Muslim b. al-Ḥajjāj and Abū Bakr b. Abī Dāwūd narrated from him, and he was trustworthy. He died in Dhū al-Ḥijjah of this year. Al-ʿAbbās b. al-Faraj, Abū al-Faḍl al-Riyāshī al-ʿAbbās b. al-Faraj, Abū al-Faḍl al-Riyāshī, client of Muḥammad b. Sulaymān [b. ʿAlī b. ʿAbd Allāh b. al-ʿAbbās], from the people of Basra. Riyāsh was a man from Judhām, and Abū al-ʿAbbās was his slave, so his lineage remained attached to him. Al-Riyāshī was of high standing in literature. He said: He was among the trustworthy memorizers; he memorized the books of Abū Zayd and all the books of al-Aṣmaʿī, and he heard from him. He read "Kitāb Sībawayh" to Abū ʿUthmān al-Māzinī, and al-Māzinī used to say: Al-Riyāshī read the book to me, and he is more knowledgeable of it than I. He died in this year, killed by the Zanj. And on the authority of al-Aṣmaʿī, who said: Al-Riyāshī addressed us in the desert, and he praised God, extolled Him, declared His oneness, sought His forgiveness, and invoked blessings upon His Prophet ﷺ. He achieved brevity, then said: O people, this world is an abode of trial, and the Hereafter is an abode of permanence. Take for your permanent abode from your passing one, and do not tear your veils before the One from whom your secrets are not hidden. In this world you are, and for other than it you were created. I say this statement of mine and seek God's forgiveness. The one upon whom blessings are invoked is the Messenger of God, and the one for whom supplication is made is the Caliph, the Amīr Jaʿfar b. Sulaymān. And on the authority of Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Ḥusayn b. Hārūn al-Ḍabbī, who said: I found in the book of my father: Abū ʿAbd Allāh Muḥammad b. ʿUmar al-Kātib recited to me, saying: Al-Mubarrad recited to me, from al-Riyāshī: If only my flesh, when it decayed, had been played with by noble lions, hyenas, and wolves, That would have lightened my grief and consoled my misfortune, But what destroyed my flesh were dogs. Aḥmad b. Muḥammad al-Asadī said: In his book he said: Abū ʿAbd Allāh recited to me, saying: My father recited to me, saying: Al-Riyāshī recited to me: A man's soul is distressed by an insult [once], Yet he hears ten after it, then he falls silent. And on the authority of Muḥammad b. al-Qāsim al-Anbārī, who said: Aḥmad b. Muḥammad al-Asadī recited to us, saying: Al-Riyāshī recited to us: Indeed branches, when you straighten them, become upright, But wood does not bend when you straighten it. Discipline may benefit youths in due time, But discipline does not benefit one with gray hair. And on the authority of ʿAlī b. Abī Umayyah, who said: When the Zanj entered Basra and killed those they killed—that was in Shawwāl of the year 257 AH—we learned that they entered the mosque upon al-Riyāshī with their swords while he was standing performing the forenoon prayer, and they struck him with their swords and said: "Bring the money!" Al-Riyāshī kept saying: "What money?" until he died. When the Zanj left Basra, we entered it and passed by Banū Māzin, where al-Riyāshī used to dwell, and we entered his mosque, and there he was, cast down facing the qiblah as if he had been directed toward it, with a cloak that the wind moved, and it had become tattered. All of his body was sound and intact; his belly had not split open, nor had his condition changed, except that his skin had clung to his bones and dried. That was two years after his killing, may God have mercy on him. Faḍl the poetess Faḍl the poetess. She was among the slave women born in Basra, and her mother was among those born in al-Yamāmah, where she herself was born. She grew up in the house of a man from Banū ʿAbd al-Qays, who educated her, trained her, and sold her. She was [eloquent and refined], and there was no woman in her time more poetic than she. Muḥammad b. al-Mufarrij al-Rukhkhajī bought her and gave her as a gift to al-Mutawakkil. When she was brought before him, he said to her: "Are you a poetess?" She said: "So claim the one who sold me and the one who bought me." He said: "Recite to me some of your poetry." She said: The king, the imam of guidance, received the caliphate, In the year two hundred and thirty-three. A caliphate that passed to Jaʿfar, While he was twenty-seven years old. We hope, O imam of guidance, That you will rule for eighty years. May God not sanctify a man who does not say, When I supplicate for you: Amen. Then al-Mutawakkil said to ʿAlī b. al-Jahm: "Compose a verse and demand that Faḍl the poetess complete it." So ʿAlī said: "Complete it, O Faḍl." He sought refuge with her, complaining to her, But he found no refuge with her. She bowed her head for a little while, then said: He remained entreating her, His eyelids pouring down fine rain. They reproached him, and his love increased, So he died of passion—and what then? Al-Mutawakkil was delighted and said: "You have done well, by my life, O Faḍl," and he ordered for her two thousand dinars. One day Abū Dulaf al-ʿIjlī cast to her: They said: You have fallen in love with a young girl, and I answered them: The most desirable of mounts to me is one not yet ridden. How much difference between a pierced pearl, That has been worn, and a pearl not yet pierced. She said: Indeed a mount is not pleasant to ride, Until it is tamed with the rein and ridden. And the pearl does not benefit its owners, Until it is strung for the necklace and pierced. And Faḍl wrote to Banān: O soul, be patient; it is a death That both the liar and the truthful must swallow. Banān thought that I betrayed him— Then my soul is divorced from my body. Muḥammad b. Ḥassān b. Fayrūz, Abū Jaʿfar al-Azraq, client of Maʿn b. Zāʾidah Muḥammad b. Ḥassān b. Fayrūz, Abū Jaʿfar al-Azraq, client of Maʿn b. Zāʾidah. He heard Sufyān b. ʿUyaynah, Ibn Mahdī, Wakīʿ, and others, and he was truthful. He died in Dhū al-Qaʿdah. In this year Muḥammad b. al-Khaṭṭāb al-Mawṣilī died, and he was among the people of knowledge and asceticism. Among the notable persons who died in it was al-Ruʾāsī, whom the Zanj slaughtered among those they killed from the people of Basra, as we have previously related their story—may God disfigure them—and what they killed of the Muslims, may God have mercy on them. Also ʿAlī b. Khushram and Abū Saʿīd al-Ashajj, one of the shaykhs of Muslim from whom he narrates frequently.
