Translation
✧ Some of the Biography of al-Muntaṣir Al-Muntaṣir was of great forbearance, sound intellect, abundant beneficence, desirous of good, generous, greatly equitable, pleasant in companionship, seldom unjust, benevolent toward the ʿAlawīs, and maintaining ties with them. He removed from the family of Abū Ṭālib the fear and tribulation they had been in by permitting them to visit the grave of al-Ḥusayn, and he returned Fadak to the family of al-Ḥusayn. Yazīd al-Muhallabī said concerning that: You have indeed done good to the Ṭālibīs after they had been blamed for a time and then another time And you restored the affection of Hāshim, so I saw them After enmity among them, as brothers It is mentioned that when al-Muntaṣir assumed the caliphate, the first thing he did was to dismiss Ṣāliḥ b. ʿAlī from Madinah and appoint over it ʿAlī b. al-Ḥusayn b. Ismāʿīl b. al-ʿAbbās b. Muḥammad. ʿAlī said: When I entered to bid him farewell, he said to me: “O ʿAlī! I am sending you to my flesh and blood,” and he extended his forearm and said: “To this I am sending you. Consider how you will be toward the people and how you will deal with them,” meaning the family of Abū Ṭālib. He said: “I hope to comply with the command of the Commander of the Faithful, if God Almighty wills.” He said: “Then you will be fortunate in my sight.” (Among his sayings: “By God, no possessor of falsehood has become mighty, even if the moon rose from his forehead, and no possessor of truth has become lowly, even if the whole world united against him.”) Among his sayings: (“The pleasure of pardon is sweeter than the pleasure of vengeance, and the ugliest action of one who has power is revenge.”) When he assumed authority... he began to revile the Turks and say: “These are the killers of the caliphs.” So they plotted against him and resolved to harm him, but they were unable to do so because he was awe-inspiring, brave, astute, and cautious.
